Hi All  --

I have hit a roadblock.

I have used a TS-480 remotely for years.  Recently, the owners of the remote site changed their internet service provider.  I took the laptop computer I use at the control site, my Control RRC and my TS-480 control head to the radio site, and I reconfigured both the Radio and the Control RRCs.  Due to scheduling issues, I had to leave the radio site immediately after confirming that all worked together on the network at the radio site.  The Radio and Control RRCs are not communicating now that they are on different networks.  I cannot access the Radio RRC outside of the Radio RRC's network.

While at the radio site, I (believe I) dealt with firewall issues to allow communications between the Radio and Control RRCs.

In the Radio Settings for the Control RRC, I now have the outside address of the Radio RRC.  Previously, I used a ddns hostname.

Any thoughts?  I'm at a loss, although I suspect that I am missing something obvious.

I can get to the remote site to make any changes that I need to make, and alternatively, I should be able to get access to a PC at the remote site to make any changes to the Radio RRC settings that may be required.

Configuration, RRC 1258 / High rise help needed
« on: 2018-04-23, 23:18:48 »
I operate a TS-480HX.  The Radio RRC and rig are in Jupiter, FL and the Control RRC and rig control head are in New York.

The setup works just about perfectly when I use the Control RRC and the rig control head at my single family house in Bridgehampton, NY.  Things don't work so great, though, when I move the Control RRC and the control head to our new (to us) NYC apartment in a high rise building.

Our NYC apartment has two ISPs available; Spectrum (formerly Time Warner) and Fios.  We opted for Fios.  Both my computer and the Control RRC are hard wired to a bridge, which is connected by coax to the router.

On occasion I can turn on the rig using the control head (most of the time the control head does not light up and there is no audio).  When I am successful in turning on the rig, I can usually operate FT-8 without a problem.  If, however, I try to operate CW (my preferred mode), within a minute or so there will be a squawk and the control head will go dark.  Sometimes I lose audio, and other times I don't.  Sometimes the control head light will come back on, and sometimes it doesn't.  When this happens, sometimes a restart of the Control RRC will get things back on track, and sometimes not.  Similarly, sometimes a restart of the Radio RRC followed by a restart of the Control RRC will get things back as they should be.

My computer can always locate both the Control RRC and the Radio RRC, and varying the power makes no difference on any of the above behavior.

I presume the issue is with internet access at the NYC apartment since all works fine at my house.

Any suggestions would be most welcome.

General discussion forum / bad internet connection?
« on: 2016-10-14, 14:35:55 »
Hi all  --

I've been having some problems recently; I think they all stem from a poor or intermittent internet connection between the Radio RRC and the Control RRC.  Here are the issues:

1.  While using the WJST modes (with a Signalink), the red LED on the Control RRC comes on, and if receiving, the waterfall goes blank.  Sometimes the control head of my TS-480 goes dark and sometimes it does not.  A reboot of Control RRC usually gets everything working again (for at least a little while).

2.  Occasionally while using the WJST modes, my power out appears to fluctuate; when it fluctuates, it appears to spike higher and then go to 0.

3.  While using CW (using the Winkey emulator and N1MM+), sometimes some of the characters are not formed correctly.  For example, a character or two may be dropped, or a dah may be elongated.   It does not seem as if my CW becomes complete jibberish.  I have never seen the Control RRC red LED illuminated while operating CW.

4.  Occasionally (but rarely), I cannot access the Radio RRC program from my control computer.  Problems 1-3 above are often present even when I can access the Radio RRC program from my control computer.

Several weeks ago there was a lightning hit at the remote site.  While no ham equipment was damaged, some electronics elsewhere in the house were damaged.

I have tried rebooting both the router on the radio side and the router on the control side.  This does not appear to have any effect.

An ethernet cable connects the Radio RRC to the router at the remote site.  These problems continue whether I use we-fi or an ethernet cable to connect the Control RRC to the router at the control site.

Rebooting the Radio RRC and the Control RRC seems to help for at least some time, but the problems eventually reoccur.   It seems to me as if the problems are becoming more frequent.

Both the Radio RRC and the Control RRC use software version 2.90.

Does anybody have any thoughts about what is causing these problems and what can be done to address them?

All thoughts are welcome!

Hi all  --

I have a strange situation.  The modem at the remote site was recently replaced with a new ATT U-verse modem (model 5268AC).  I think it uses an IPv6  system, but I'm not sure.  The DMZ firewall setting for the Radio RRC seems ok.

Here's the weird part:  everything worked fine for the first four days or so after the new modem was installed and I made several CW, SSB and digital contacts.  Now, however, when I key the rig the meter does indicates that no power is being transmitted, and I hear nothing but noise on any band.  The noise remains constant, changing only as a result of changing modes or changing filters.  The frequency readout changes as I spin the VFO, but the noise remains the same.

The Control and Radio RRCs are still communicating.  The rig's frequency lock is not on, and the "all lock" has not been engaged.

I'm baffled.  I know that the IPv6 system may complicate things, but I can't understand why the Control and Radio RRCs can communicate if there is an IP address problem.  All thoughts are welcome.

UPDATE 10 September 2016:  The problem turned out to be a problem with the rig, not with the internet connection.

I've been using my setup successfully for about a year and a half (RRC-1258 MkII).  I'm using a host name of xxxxxxxx.ddns.remoterig.com, and I've never had a problem with the Control RRC and the Radio RRC communicating with each other (and I'm not having a problem with that now).  Apparently mistakenly, I thought I could enter that host name into the computer that I use with the Control RRC and access my Radio RRC settings.  This works only sporadically.  I assume this is because the IP address of the Radio RRC changes, but every so often it changes to the address that my control-side computer likes.

What do I need to do to always access my Radio RRC settings from my control-side computer?  I'm not experienced at all with networking and I'm afraid I'll screw up something that actually works ok now.

Any advice?  Leave well enough alone?

My rig is a TS-480.  For CW I key it using a keyboard and N1MM+'s winkey emulator.   I usually operate CW at between 30 and 35 WPM.

My setup has worked well for several months, but last week I received an email (with sound files attached) informing me that in at least one instance my CW was noticeably garbled.  Since then I have monitored my remote CW signal using a separate receiver, and while most of the time the CW is fine, occasionally it is a bit garbled.  Can anyone shed some insight on how to correct this?

I'm using Version 2.87 of the software.  I have no issues when using either SSB or the digital modes, so I assume the issue is with either my software settings or something that may have changed within N1MM+.

I'd also appreciate it if anyone who uses N1MM+ with the winkey emulator could send me their software advanced settings, their keyer settings, and any other relevant settings that I may have overlooked.

Thanks very much.

I operate a TS-480 keying the rig on CW with N1MM+'s Winkey emulator.  While it works very well after the fairly recent software upgrade, I've been unable to configure the RRCs to operate full break in.  Has anyone done so with a setup similar to mine?  If so, what are your settings?

Thanks and 73,

Hi all  --

About a year ago I set up CAT control of my TS-480 using N1MM+.  All worked well until recently.  In attempting to address an issue that had been present while operating the digital modes, I (stupidly) changed a couple of the advanced settings on the control side and applied the changes while N1MM+ was still open.    I lost both CAT control and the ability to send CW using the Winkey emulator.  Attempting to reconfigure N1MM+ did not solve either issue.

I then uninstalled N1MM+ and all of its folders and reinstalled it.  After some effort, I was able to configure N1MM+ to send CW using the Winkey emulator.  I have not been able to reestablish CAT control.

In addition, I no longer am able to access the Radio RRC settings using my remoterig ddns address.  I understand that a power outage at the radio side may have caused this to occur.

Despite the foregoing, I am able to operate on CW and on the digital modes, which are my primary interests.

Does anybody know how to reestablish CAT control of a TS-480 once it has been lost, and how to regain the ability to connect to the Radio RRC?

Thanks very much.
