Paul

ur problem sounds similiar to mine.  My K3 mini /K3 remote has been working for several months.  over past week have had many occaisions when k3 will not turn ON....also have had the K3 turn OFF by itself in  the middle of operating it.  I can cycle the AC power on the RR Boxes and also the remote K3 PS an Astron 35 and most times the K3 will turn ON but sometimes not.

Still at a loss as to what is wrong.  I read a few online posts on Elecraft reflector  about the Astron 35 amp suppply and others having issues with the K3 turning OFF...have another supply here which i will  try but didn't want to use it as it is a switching supply .

THe K3 turns on by a ground being place on pin 8 of the ACC socket.  I have reseated the ACC plugs  while at the site  and also reseated all the connections to the RR box....

Also i have discovered there is packet loss happening on my internet line...this could impact the problem ... if there are periods of high error rate on the line that can cause interruption of data flow...the RR box can sense this and send a command to the K3 to go OFF line.

Problem still persists and is ongoing as I type

Mike:  please look at this video.  Any ideas on what may be  causing errors  on the K3 Mini display....this happening today for first time.

Now have audio setting at #2 lowest 16bit setting....find that 12 bit settings too much hiss in background...but 16bit no hiss....will try #2 and see what happens.

It is working again now ...resolved by itself....last night radio was shutting OFF after being on for 5-10 mins...this morning now working OK...radio has been on for over an hour.  I reduced the audio BW to #6  maybe the setting I was using  #11 too high for the link?......When it quits running the yellow light on Control box flashing ....I wait for 10-15mins and I restart both boxes and turn OFF/ON the K3 PS .  Radio will turn on again...

Also wondering if my PS for K3 might be crapping out....old pre-used Astron 35 and I read posts from people who had issues with that unit.

Still working on understanding how to use the features of the RR units.  Are there any application notes or basicinfo on how to use the TTL feature of the Radio RR Box.  Using a K3 Mini here and remote K3

Mike  Thank you for your reply again.   Here is the I/O settings that exist.  I have the correct settings according to your note.  Still the K3 will not turn on.

Is it possible to use ON/OFF selection and then OFF/ON button to turn on the K3 manually?  I tried to set selection to ON/OFF but it does not complete when APPLY CHANGES is clicked.

IO settings

OUT0 mode   CONNECT
OUT0 on/off

OUT1 mode   KEYER
OUT1 on/off

OUT2 mode   KEYER

At present my K3 is OFF and will not turn on.  I have powered the RCCRemote OFF and ON and also turn OFF and ON the K3 PS....turning on K3 Mini does not turn ON K3 can see in webcam.

OK Thanks for explanation..

.I am still having another issue that started yesterday after my home modem rebooted unexpectedly while I was using the remote.   Now when I turn on the K3 remote from home it only will stay on for 5-10 mins and then shuts down...but K3 Mini is still on and gives audible alarm.  The connection is being lost for some reason...but why does the K3 shut down...I have been at the remote site and reseated cable to the ACC and I/O jack....but no change in issue.

Any ideas?

While remote K3 radio is ON and functioning the STATUS page at remote RR box show radio status OFF.  Why does it show as OFF when radio is actually ON.?   Is that the normal indication ??...STATUS will say OFF when radio is ON and also OFF...no change?  I had not noticed this previously ...

Also what is the purpose of the DISCONNECT button?  .. on this page when the radio is actually ON but status shows radio as OFF...

Same DISCONNECT button is not at CONTROL status page.

Status

Disconnect
Name   Value
Radio   OFF
Connection status   OK
SIP status   Connected/transfering
Last SIP error   None
RTP status   Excellent(60)

Larry...also see this:

I could see in my remote webcam that the radio was on MIC SEL: FP.H BIAS and needed to be on rPH BIAS ....the Mini was in opposite selection rPH........I disconnected the Mini from the CONTROL box and set it to FPH then powered down and reconnected...then changed menu on Mini to rPH and could see on the camera the K3 changed now to rPH BIAS.

Plugged in mike with fingers crossed and VOILA...SSB working!   So how did mini and K3 get on opposite settings?? ...no idea but at least working again for now.

Thanks for your reply Larry.  Its possible I used those settings when first installed the unoit....in any event when I first installed the remote SSB worked all OK so if the ATTENUATION was set to YES at that time then something else must have been going on....I did a FACTORY reset of the CONTROL unit. ....  SSB now works as well as VOX and ALC indication on the K3 Mini display.

SO I will not be messing with settings for some time!

I discovered that CODEC INPUT ATTENTUATION parameter was set to YES in the Remote box.  How it got set to YES is unknown to me.  This didn't look right to me.... so I set it to NO  and also set the default values for CODEC OUTPUT GAIN and CODEC INPUT GAIN in both boxes.  I re- adjusted CODEC INPUT GAIN in the CONTROL box to 40 and may reduce it further upon more monitoring.

I now have SSB audio working again using both headsets...the Heil and the CM-500.!   The problem was the CODEC INPUT ATTENTUATION was turned on....I don't know how it got turned on or when.

I feel like a clutzh not having noticed this before.  I guess its an issue of understanding what all these settings are actually for.   It would have been helpful if there was a reference table listing out what the various settings are addressing.

Now that SSB is working and there is nothing wrong with the headsets I experimented with turing the BIAS OFF and then ON in the MAIN:MIC SEL rP.H  BIAS parameter in the K3 Mini.  Both headsets work whether BIAS is ON or OFF !...there is no change whatsoever!.  This is telling me that if both mikes require bias in order to work then the function of taping "2" on the K3 is not actually turning BIAS OFF....it is merely changing the display. Maybe this is something for Elecraft to address

Anyway thanks for your help and interest in replying to my posts.  I am very happy the issue is solved with help and comments from a number of people including yourself.  Your thoughs helped me correct the issue.

I have discoveries  regarding my SSB audio output problem with my K3 Remote setup.  I reset both  RR BOXES to their DEFAULT PROFILES:

1.)  Issues are same for Yamaha CM500 and Heil Proset

2.)  With headsets plugged into the MIC and SPKRS jack on K3 Mini

I can now get SSB audio and power out if I set mike gain at 30 and COMPRESSION at 25.

3.) Below 25DB COMP power out falls off dramatically.

4.) At 0 COMP there is 0 power output no matter where the mike gain is set.

5.) In MAIN:MIC SEL... rP.H BIAS....I can turn BIAS OFF and the mikes in each headset still work.  Turning BIAS on again doesn't change anything with the mikes.

6.) I used the external BIAS box that came with the CM500 and turned off internal rig BIAS....result is that the CM500 gives same audio level whether I use the BIAS box or not ...there is no difference with BIAS box in and out of the line terms of rig output when Mike gain is 30 and COMP is 25.

7)  The VOX does not work.  Have RTP Tx Mode set to CONTINUOUS in both RR boxes and also have FULL DUPLEX set YES.

8) I am using the PTT jack provided on the back panel of the K3 Mini.

Running COMP at 25 is too high....and I wonder why its has to be like that.  Did not have to set it that high when first setup the remote .  Something has changed.   Can you see anything relative to the BIAS that may not be right.?
