General discussion forum / Internet Data Usage of RemoteRig
« on: 2018-11-02, 10:29:01 »
For anyone interested, here I'd like to share the real life Internet data usage of my (VE3VEE) remote station. The usage may vary based on your settings. The Audio Quality settings I use are the #2 - Linear 16 bits 8 kHz in both, my Radio-RRC and also my Control-RRC.

This past weekend, I participated in the CQ WW DX Contest (PHONE). My TCVR was turned on the entire 48 period. The screen shot above shows my one day data usage. In 24 hours my station used 1.5 GB of upload + 1.5 GB of download = 3 GB of data in total. The entire 48 hour contest used up 6 GB of data. This is however an extreme situation when my TCVR was on constantly 48 hours non-stop. My regular usage is much less. I may share, in the future, my actual data usage for a one week period and for a one month period.

General discussion / Any way to try before I buy?
« on: 2017-08-27, 15:36:36 »
The description reads: "You can download and install the software, before you order. Everything works but itís not possible to connect to the remote RRC until you have the RRC-Micro USB Dongle/ PTT box.".

If it's not possible to connect, how can I really test it?

TS-480 Control Head Wanted. Anyone has one for sale?

Hello everyone,

I don't know if this is a RemoteRig or TS-480 issue, but I'm asking for help on this forum as there are users of both here.

When using my microphone's PTT switch (or my foot-switch connected in parallel with it) there's an unwanted PTT-off delay of about a second and a half till I start hearing my RX. Interestingly though, this delay is NOT present when I play pre-recorded messages from my TS-480's voice memory module. After the message finishes, the RX comes on instantly.

The unwanted PTT-off delay may be a big annoyance in contests. Is there any way I can help it?

General discussion forum / microKEYER II
« on: 2015-09-07, 13:45:41 »
Do all the features of microKEYER II work via RemoteRig?

I'm considering to buy microKEYER II. I would use it with my TS-480 tcvr and I would use Win-Test as the software.

I've searched this forum, but I didn't find much written about microKEYER II. I've found several unanswered questions about microKEYER and that makes me a bit hesitant to go ahead and place my order.

Occasionally, I take my TS-480 control unit to work, but I would prefer to stop taking with my CW paddle as well. What are my CW options? Is there an easy way to set up TS-480 + RemoteRig for keyboard keying and/or memory keying?

General discussion / RRC Micro - OUT OF STOCK
« on: 2015-07-25, 14:51:06 »
For a long time I've been undecided whether to buy RRC-Micro or not... now it is out of stock, LOL. Is there a new version just about to be launched, or is it simply out of stock?

For me, the ideal solution would be a software-only solution without the need for any hardware dongle. Would you guys consider releasing a product like that... something like RRC-Nano app, but for PC Windows?

When the app was first released, it worked. It was a nice toy to play with. Then, a couple of weeks later, I observed that the app would "connect", but instead of displaying 14 MHz (where my TS-480 was), it would always display "10.320 kHz", but no radio sound, and the change band buttons were not responsive.

I even re-installed the app, but that didn't correct the issue.

Nice app, though. The only "issue" I found while it worked that the dial knob was tricky to use. I would have preferred "Up" and "Down" buttons for dialing instead of the less accurate dial knob.

In a future version of RRC, would it be possible to avoid using USB cables between Control-RRC and laptop?

Recently, I started to use a Lantronix serial server (for my remote watt-meter). It requires no device and/or USB cables at my control location. It installed virtual com port(s) on my laptop and that's all. It would be excellent for me to be able to avoid the use of the USB cable(s) between my Control RRC and my laptop. I often move it between my home/car/work/etc, and the fewer cables the better.

A strange issiu I've just observed. When my RRC at home is connected to the Internet via WiFi, there is a lot of strange noise in my audio as soon as I press PTT. I don't even need to talk and I can see my watt-meter jumping quite a lot very high. However, when I connect to the Internet via Ethernet cable, there's no noise in my audio and the watt-meter doesn't move when I press PTT and don't talk.

This is as if the microphone was picking up RF, and even the mic and processor settings have effect on the level of noise, but my radio station is over 100 kilometers away...

Any ideas what I could do to solve this mystery? I've opened the RRC to make sure the WiFi board was seated well an the antenna connector was tightened.

Hello all,

Is it possible to adjust TX audio quality independently of RX audio quality? For example, could I set one RRC's Audio Quality to number "2" and the other RRC's Audio Quality to number "0"?

The "0" setting would be OK for me for my RX, but I would like Audio Quality setting of "2" for my TX audio.

If this is possible, which RRC unit should be set to "0" and which one should have the "2" setting?

I'm just trying to save on the Internet bandwidth. I can live with worse RX audio quality, but I would like to keep TX audio good.

Hello all,

LP-100A's manual says the Wattmeter's baud rate is 115,200. I don't think the com ports of either the RRC-1258MkIIs or Webswitch 1216H support such high baud rate. Also, wouldn't such a high baud rate connection slow things down on a slow internet connection? Does anyone on this forum use an LP-100A?

Thanks,

I finally, after several months of hard work, activated my remote location (pics http://www.qrz.com/db/VE3VEE ). RemoteRig worked fine till today. See the attached image. The mini USB broke off, and I'm unable to control the station via my logging software, unable to control my rotator, etc.

I'm not sure if I can fix it somehow. I don't see how, but if anyone can think of some quick solution, please let me know. Also, are these units covered by warranty?

HNY 2014 to all.

I have the following:
- A pair of RRC-1258MkIIs
- TS-480SAT
- Web Power Switch 7 by Digital Loggers, Inc.

The above equipment has been tested at a remote location 40 km from home, and it has worked reliably for the past two weeks.

The next step is to move the equipment to a different remote location, 190 km from home, where a 100 ft tower is awaiting. I have not yet purchased a rotator and related accessories, nor have I purchased an antenna yet. I've been considering a 20m monoband Yagi (undecided yet if 3, 4, or 5 elements).

Questions:

1. I'm thinking of buying Yaesu G-1000DXA rotator, but I'm open to suggestions of different makes and models.

2. If I go with Yaesu G-1000DXA, do I need the included Control Box? I think I do. Or is there another control box by a different manufacturer more suitable for remote operation?

3. Do I need to buy Yaesu GS-232B? Is this all I need, or:

4. Do I also need to buy RC-1216H?

The way I think all this works is as follows: The Yaesu rotor cable goes to the the Yaesu control box, a cable from the Yaesu control box goes to Yaesu GS-232B, and a cable from Yaesu GS-232B goes to RC-1216H.

Am I understanding all this correctly, or am I making it too complicated? Can it work just the same without RC-1216H by plugging GS-232 to my RRC-1258MkIIs? If yes, what software would I use on my laptop to control the rotator?

I'm completely new to this, and any answers will be greatly appreciated. I want to avoid buying the wrong or unneeded equipment.

Would it be possible to include in one of the future firmware updates the "Uptime" value on the "Info" page to show Days, Hours, Minutes, and Seconds instead of just Seconds?

Thanks for your kind consideration.
