Mitch,

Thanks for the prompt reply!

When you say "The other one(s) must not be connected to the radio RRC", do you mean it must be literally unplugged from the wall or from the network completely, or is it simply necessary that the "tcvr" is turned off at the second (e.g. home) location?

So for example, both (or multiple) Control-RRCs can be pluged to the wall and plugged to the network all at the same time, but only one of them can actually turn the "ON" button on the TCVR and use it? If this is how it works, all is good and we wouldn't have to try to remember to actually unplug our Control-RRCs before leaving our homes... :-)

Mitch,

I'm glad it has worked for you from your car!

I have also been toying with the idea of either buying another Control-RRC + TS-480 head unit or trying the RRC-Micro PC Client. You have a very good question, though. Would the Control-RRC at home need to be unplugged for the Control-RRC (or RRC-Micro) in our cars to work? I don't know.

Gary,

I haven't tried the dongle option, but I do often use my Control-RRC and my TS-480 control unit in my car. I have made QSOs with several DXpeditions this way SSB and CW. Of course the quality of service will depend on your mobile internet speed, which will vary depending on your location, but I find it usable. I occasionally use it also from various internet hotspots (restaurant parking lots, etc).

Yes, but you deal with software licenses because of RRC-Nano already so this wouldn't be anything new to you anymore ;) and a software-only version could appeal to people who would find it convenient to use their remote via their laptop without the necessity to carry around any additional piece of hardware ;) hopefully that would result in more customers for you ;)

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your prompt reply.

Would you guys ever consider releasing a software-only version of RRC Micro, something like RRC-Nano app, but for PC Windows?

For a long time I've been undecided whether to buy RRC-Micro or not... now it is out of stock, LOL. Is there a new version just about to be launched, or is it simply out of stock?

For me, the ideal solution would be a software-only solution without the need for any hardware dongle. Would you guys consider releasing a product like that... something like RRC-Nano app, but for PC Windows?

Adam, it looks like a home made stuff.

General discussion forum / Re: TS480 noise during TX
« on: 2015-07-13, 13:08:06 »
Hi Michael,

I have tested the direct connection between TS480 transceiver and TS480 control unit and then it works correctly, modulation is then ok.

Than the issue is not at the remote tower site, but rather the problem must be at the control (home) site. Unclean power would be my first suspicion because I have experienced the exact issue when attempting to use my TS-480 control head from a car with an inexpensive power inverter. It worked just fine as long as nothing else was connected to the inverter, but as soon as I started to charge my laptop via the inverter I got a LOT of noise in my audio.

Could you power your control-RRC with a 12V battery just to test it?

Serge,

You will find various web power-bars on the web and/or eBay.

I should also mention RemoteRig sells a remote power switch, too ( http://www.remoterig.com/wp/?page_id=166 ). I actually bought one, but never used it because I like that the other units have power outlets installed so I didn't have to do any wiring myself. But if this is something that would fit your needs, I still have it and it even includes the optional RS-232 adapter.

Serge,

At first I used Web Power Switch 7 by Digital Loggers, a pretty looking unit, but it failed during the first winter. However, it could have just simply been due to it being exposed to extreme cold outside of the operating temperature range specified by the manufacturer (Operating Temperature -30º to 170ºF, -34º to 77ºC). All of my equipment is inside an outdoor metal electrical enclosure attached to the base of my 30m/100ft tower. The equipment is exposed to temperature variations, but this one has so far been the only hardware failure.

Now I use NP-16 by Synaccess which I bought on eBay (front view, rear view). It has survived this past winter without problems just like all of my other equipment inside the unheated outdoor electrical enclosure, LOL.

Serge,

I think you are VERY lucky that you are able to use the same ISP on both ends. That I believe should mean your signal should not be slowed down by the "internet" because it will travel within your ISP's own network. Do keep us posted in this thread about the progress of your project. I think you have a good chance of achieving decent quality of service.

I use Rogers as the ISP for my home (control-RRC) and a small local Wireless ISP at my tower site (radio-RRC).

As Mike suggested, when you are at the cottage, you can measure your ping, download speed, and upload speed all at the same time at www.speedtest.net

Do you have a VOIP telephone at the cottage? Have you ever used Skype or any voice communication over the internet from your cottage? That could be an indication of the quality of service you can achieve with RemoteRig + a TCVR.

I'm using TS-480. I don't have experience with using any other TCVR with RemoteRig RRC. My remote station is about 3 hours drive from my home. I can control my rotator, power amplifier, remote power/swr meter, I have a power bar there that has 16 power outlets that can be individually turned on/off, my router there is set up to allow me to reboot it remotely if needed. The whole setup has been more reliable than I expected it be.

Hi Serge,

Your current 1.3 mbps down / 600 kbps up is in my opinion quite low. It may work as long as it doesn't drop down too much below that. It would help if you could have the same ISP at both ends, for example if Bell.ca is your ISP at your cottage consider using Bell.ca at home, too.

My ISP at the radio site is a Wifi ISP and my latency is likely worse than that of your DSL. I'm not sure what the actual download and upload speeds are as I haven't visited the radio site in 8 months, but the Wifi ISP advertizes 6 mbps down / 1 mbps up. With my speeds (and latency) it is usable most of the time. Occasionally, when the internet at the radio site is likely experiencing slowdown, it does affect usability especially when sending CW.

When I was setting up my remote QTH, I was aware the slow internet could affect the quality of service, but the internet, in the longer term, would eventually improve. If I were you, I would suggest to think in long term. Even if the internet causes you problems now, a few years down the road it will likely improve.

Hi Jack,

I experience starting issues similar to yours unless I put my control RRC into the DMZ of my router (control site).

73 Marvin VE3VEE

74
Hi Bob,

The same issue with my TS-480 setup. It gets worse when my Internet connectivity is not perfect, but even when the Internet is just fine the CW is never perfect. As you said, if you send a long series of dots, you will hear the issue. The error may occur every 10, 20, or 30 seconds... but eventually the error does occur. Search this forum for various CW optimization settings, but I'm uncertain if error-free CW can be achieved. Has anyone achieved it?

Sorry I'm late to this conversation, but I experienced the downtime last Friday, too. I was unable to start my TCVR the entire evening (my local time). It started to work on Saturday morning. My TCVR / RemoteRig setup used RemoteRig's DNS. During the downtime I was able to rotate my antenna. My rotator and also my Watt/SWR meter both use Lantronix serial server and my own static IP. (I've set my RemoteRig to use my own static IP since this incident.)
