Look at Appendix A in the RemoteRig manual. There you will see the effect on bandwidth of using various codecs.

Codec 0 uses 80k bps in each direction. Codec 2 doubles that requirement to 160k bps. 12 is new, and I haven't
tried it you yet, but looks even better for 3G type of work. Of course, using dual receive doubles the bandwidth
yet again for every codec, but this mainly effects Yaesu and Elecraft Twin users,

Looks like you are on the right track, good luck!

Hi Dave,

In that case, use the Microbit Setup Manager over USB to look at the IP settings. This is the
only way really to figure out if you received an IP number and call-up the config web page on
the RRC.

I don't know if you every requested my checklist. This covers the basic networking issues to
set this up. If you haven't, drop me a short mail at dj0qn (at) darc.de and I will send it to you.

I am out the rest of the day now.

Dave,

Is your RRC set for DHCP? If so, it should pull-down an IP number just like another PC when connected to
the other computer that is sharing the connection.

Dirk,

Yes, the same sample rate, but some people don't understand that and do crazy things,
so I just say it is much easier to use identical codecs. However, anything above 0 is
unnecessary, unless you use using FM, ESSB or maybe some digital modes, and/or if you
have two sold high bandwidth lines (going up). I am running several remote stations, only
one is using codec 2 and the rest 0 with no complaints.

Dirk,

Take a look at the message I just posted under http://www.remoterig.com/forum/index.php?topic=1380.msg5781#msg5781
It also covers pretty much what I would suggest to you.

I would also follow the manual and use the same codecs on both RRC's. If you are using the PC Client, that is a different story.

You didn't mention the bandwidth or type of provider you are using. This makes a huge
difference in settings.

As a general rule, I always set everything to the minimum codec necessary. In most cases,
I have found 0 is perfectly acceptable for CW & SSB work, anything higher is just overhead.
You can see the effect of increasing the codec above 0 in appendix A of the RemoteRig manual.
Keep in mind that this bandwidth is in both directions! The same applies to serial connections,
such as for CAT. For example, if you can use 4800, then do so and not 57600. This just eats
up unnecessary bandwidth.

Some suggested settings for low bandwidth, mainly 3G that I give people:

These 2 are important:
- audio quality to 0
- turn continuous RTP on

Play around with these 3 until you are satisfied:
- increase rx jitter buffer to min 10
- increase rx jitter delay to min 12
- audio packet size 20 or 40

General discussion forum / Re: K3/0 -> K3/100 Known bugs?
« on: 2012-06-01, 12:36:13 »
Hi Adde,

There was never a problem on the RemoteRig side, but were some bugs in the K3 firmware that
Wayne was to look at when he has time (he is busy with KX3 firmware). I think he fixed some of
them in the newest firmware, but I haven't had a chance to try it out. My test remote K3 was not
accessible and I haven't had much time. I have been using a full K3 on both ends and not the K3/0.

When I move to a new QTH in October, I will be sharing a K3 twin in both directions with an OM
in W7. I may buy a K3/0 and another RRC set to make it easier for us. I expect my other K3 remote
location in northern Germany to come back online soon as well.

Juan Carlos,

The first question that anyone will ask you: has your external IP number changed since March?
If so, how often does it change?

General discussion forum / Re: DNS vs Static IP?
« on: 2012-05-31, 06:53:54 »
Hi Dave,

At the risk of oversimplifying:

DNS: A server that is used to "convert" plain names to the real IP number. For example, when you type
"www.cnn.com", the DNS server knows that is "157.166.255.19" and sends you to the correct server.

Static IP: An IP address that is set by the admin, rather than by the router. The router uses its "DHCP" server
to provide IP addresses for network devices, which makes things (usually) easier for users.

If you are having trouble setting-up your RRC's, just send me a short mail at dj0qn (at) darc.de and I will
send you a short checklist to walk you through the process.

Hi Craig,

I see that no one answered yet.....

It is just a straight through cable with most or all wired. You have already done the "damage", but the easiest method is
to drive to the nearest Radio Shack, Fry's or equivalent and buy a normal 3-line telephone cable for a couple of Dollars.
The 3-line version has all wires connected, which you can see by looking at the connector on both sides.

The European version of the TS-480 already has a short and long cable, so no extra purchase or building is necessary.
I still bought a 3-line telephone cable to replace the long Kenwood one, because it is too stiff for my taste and stresses
the connector.

Ok, glad you double-checked. I have had it turn off to 0 for no reason twice already, so it is now
what I always check first.

Otherwise, I have two installations where I have never had a problem keying the 2000a with the
TS-480, except for the sporadic menu 28 turn-off problem.

Hi Andrew,

Did you enable keying of the amp in the TS-480 menu? Make sure that menu 28 is set correctly.

Glad to hear the good news, Jim!

I will not get to Florida this trip. I will be visiting family in Charlotte, then driving to
Dayton on Wednesday. The Sunday after Dayton we will fly to NY & NJ for a week.

Look for me at the Crowne Plaza, or at the show on the DARC booth (at ARRL Expo).

Hi Jim,

That last one was from my Blackberry while waiting for the YL to buy shoes  ;)

You use any browser to access, just put in the same address you have as the "SIP contact"
you have in your 1258, followed by the port number like :1234

Let me know if you have any further questions. I will be traveling in Germany this week and then
in the U.S. the following two weeks, so I may not be as responsive as usual. Best to e-mail me direct,
then at least I get it on the Blackberry.
