Not sure if this relates to your issue but...

I had the same crappy router and it would not let me do port forwarding.  I could go through the steps but it would not work.  I downloaded and installed the latest firmware and still I could not forward my ports.

I called Linksys and they said Port Forwarding was not possible with that Router.  It was long out of warranty and they said they could give me software to allow it to port forward for only $29.  The other option was to buy a newer version from them but I had had it with Linksys.  This was either my second or third router from them.  They seem to self destruct every couple of years.

I purchased a Netgear WNR2000 vs 2 which forwarded my ports easily and also allows SIP ALG to be disabled.  Setup is explained fairly well in their documentation.

Good Luck,

If you had the DynDNS entered in both the router and the 1258 with the 1258 port set to something other than 80 and nothing specified as far as a port on the router would this cause a conflict and prevent connecting to the 1258?  I wonder if this could have something to do with my inability to connect from outside my home network.  I do get the complaint from DynDNS that I am updating too often.

I tend to think this is not my issue as I can connect to my webpage from my work computer and other computers outside my network but I'm still unable to connect from my laptop from a remote wifi hotspot.  I also tried it from a wired connection as well as wireless connection when on vacation and still was unable to connect although I could reach my webpage from their business center computer.

It still seems as if my laptop is at fault.  There must be a service that is required that is turned off on my laptop.  Roland and Mike can both connect and operate my radio through HRD.  Are there services that are known to be required for this system to work properly?

Tried to connect to my webpage from my hotel and no luck with my laptop whether I am wireless or wired to network.  I tried the wired connection with their computer in their business center and I can bring up my webpage using the dns and port I have assigned to the unit in the shack.

I did not think they would appreciate me experimenting down there.

The conclusion I have reached is that either that connection has no port blocking but the room connection does have blocking for each access point or there is something on my laptop that is blocking my ablilty to connect to my home system. I have started every service that seemed like it might have an effect but with no change.

As I have now experienced the same problem in NV & CA it would be highly coincidental if those ports were blocked at every site I have tried.  I will have to see if my neighbor will give me access to his system so I can see if it works from there.

Thanks for the replies.

I have been suspecting the hotspots were blocking the ports but I have no way to confirm it.  I doubt it the clerks would have a clue.

My ISP, as Roland knows, is blocking Port 80 so we changed it.  I have no problem with accessing my  webpage from work and also can connect to my router.  I can connect to other web pages from hotspots and that includes using LogMeIn to access my shack desktop.

I have enabled a few services which look like they could be affecting my ability to connect, assuming it is not just a local hotspot practice to block most ports.   Maybe I WILL have to move to Sweden.

I will have to try again tomorrow to see if that makes any difference.  I did take the 1258 out of the DMZ and went back to Port Forwarding today after seeing my rig suddenly start stuttering in and out of transmit last night with nothing else going on.

There was nothing else hooked up to account for that.  My laptop and PC Client were sitting in a backpack at the time and the Control 1258 was off and not connected to anything.  I'm still waiting for version 2.39 of the firmware to post so I can install it on the Control Unit.  Roland installing it on my Radio 1258 allowed me to connect with HRD.

I figured I was being attacked and killed everything immediately.  Just lucky I was there to observe it.

Hi Mitch,

Hope you are enjoying Dayton.

I am still beating my head against a brick wall here.  Still haven't had a chance to talk a neighbor into access for me to test.

After making sure my ports were all open I tested at the local hot spots.  No Luck.  Upon checking I discovered I had also left the DMZ set to on for the unit which won't allow Port Forwarding to work.  I cleared that and tested again today.  Still no luck.

Of course it works fine on the home network.  I have disabled port forwarding and set the unit back into the DMZ.

I have been trying to connect using my DNS address and port 800 which worked fine for Roland and Mike when they got in from Sweden.  I got tired of doing all the hookup to my laptop so if I cannot get to my webpage from a hotspot I just give up on it.  I am not using a password so that should not be an issue.

I find I also cannot connect to my router which I have set up for remote administration.  This indicates to me that either something on my laptop is blocking me or the local hotspots are blocking those ports.  The firewall is shut off.  I don't use Windows Defender.  I was too optimistic and turned Bitdefender back on.  I will have to shut that down and try again tomorrow.

I can connect to my webpage and my router from my work PC with no problem.  That still doesn't eliminate something on my laptop from causing the problem.  I cannot connect it to the network at work as they won't allow it.

I will be trying it from a hotel when I go on vacation, shortly, and if that doesn't work it is time to go to my neighbors and plead my case.

Yep, I clicked on the link.

Tonight I logged into my router and discovered that I had completely lost the port forwarding setting for SIP and even though the other ports said they were forwarded they were not showing up when checking with a couple of port checking applications. Apparently editing the settings doesn't always work properly.

I deleted my settings, rebooted the router, and reentered the settings.  They all seem to be open now.  Time to make another test run.  If that fails then I go annoy my neighbor.  May not get a chance to test until Thursday morning.

I will post my results once I have a chance to test again out in the real world.

Hi Mitch,

I got frustrated using the RRC 1258 box in the field.  Too many problems for me.  I tried with a travel router, using a bridge connection, and using ICS.  Never was successful.  I decided to get the PC Client, which is what I am working with now to try to make a connection.

I have changed the HTTP Web Port and the SIP port already and, as I mentioned my rig was accessible from Sweden.

The DNS address changed when I went to DynDNS to check my setup and it automatically changed my address to that of the library, which it detected as soon as I went to check my account setup.  I had it on both my desktop and laptop for Auto Checking.  It is no longer active on my laptop.  I learned that lesson.

I have been checking into the VPN option and that sounds like a possible solution.  I will set that up tonight at home and see if my company computer at work will allow me to setup a VPN connection from there.

Unfortunately they will not allow me to connect my personal laptop to their wireless network or to attach any other devices to the workstation.

Hi Mitch,

Thanks for the reply.  I will have to see if one of my neighbors will allow me access to their network for testing.  I have tried to connect from a couple of local hotels but cannot even access their websites.  They must have something else that is required to access.  I have not even gotten an opportunity to accept their conditions.  I can connect fine at the local Library, McDonald's, and Starbuck's hotspots, although I cannot connect to my network through their hotspots.  They appear to be blocking the ports I require.

I will have to investigate what other ports I can try which may not be blocked.  That is going to be interesting.  I will have to read up on the VPN option.  I would have thought that I would need access to the other router for that to be set up.  Time to learn about VPNs.  They use that a lot at work so I am sure I can talk to someone about it to get a start on it.

My router has all the required ports forwarded and Mike & Roland have been able to connect to my rig using HRD and also to my DNS webpage for the Radio Control unit.  We had to change the HTTP web port as it appears that my ISP is blocking port 80.  They had told me that they were not blocking any ports when I called to inquire before I started setting up my system.

I went to my local library today to try connecting from outside the building but they had turned off their access today as they are closed.  Yesterday I had my DNS address changed by DynDNS, to that of the library, so that ended any testing as I could not remember my home IP to switch it back.

I guess I will have to do further research.

After a lot of effort from Roland & Mike I finally got my PC Client working on my home network and they were able to access my rig through HRD.  My FT-1000MP MKV runs at 4800 baud and they had to do some reprogramming to make it work with HRD.  They also resolved my audio dropout issue.  They are great guys and really work hard to help their customers.

I bought the PC Client and the MKII system with the idea of having access from free hotspots and hotel rooms.

I have tested this out at my local Starbucks & McDonald locations and my ports are apparently blocked.  I cannot connect with my DNS address and the port I am using at these locations.  I cannot even connect to my router using the remote port I use for management.

I have to try a local hotel and library to see if I can connect from there.  I can connect to my DNS page and router from work but I am not allowed to attach anything to their system and definitely not allowed to connect to their wireless network.  I'm pretty sure I would be able to connect from work just based on the availability of those ports.

Just wondering if anyone else is being successful in using free Wi-Fi hotspots.  I have no plans for a remote station other than accessing my home shack from on the road.  If this is not something that will work out for me I may end up, after all this work and aggravation, putting the MKII and PC Client up for sale.  I would really like to have the remote capability RemoteRig offers but if it won't work the way I need it to...

I hope someone has already resolved this for you but if not...

This is somewhat repetitious of my original post but I am looking specifically for someone familiar with Windows 7 – 64 Bit version.

My problem is that I can operate the system with no problem on my home network when it is set up in a Bridge but not in ICS, using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit version. I need to get it to work from other locations.  I can get receive audio fine when NICS are Bridged but not when using ICS.

I have been testing my setup at Starbucks as that is my closest hotspot.

I tried at Starbucks one morning in Bridged setup. Everything seemed OK. I pulled an IP for the laptop with no problem. I agreed to their terms from my laptop connection thinking this would fall through to the Bridge connection.

I was able to browse the remote control unit, (which showed a proper IP setup), through the Setup screen, via my USB connection, with no problem but could not get a connection through the Internet to my station. I'm thinking this is because I could not agree to their terms through the Control unit.

I don't travel away from home often enough to have much experience with hotspots. I had hoped to use this system on trips but I assume I would have the same issue at a hotel with accepting their agreement, if that is truly the issue.

I assumed that ICS would fall through into their network as it would not technically be a wireless connection after passing through the Ethernet NIC.

I set up for ICS on my home network and the Ethernet NIC got an IP with no problem. (192.168.137.1) The Ethernet NIC does not show a Gateway or DNS IP which appears to be normal for ICS.

I can get the remote control unit to accept a DHCP assigned address from the Ethernet NIC but it will not connect to the Network. I have to enter the IP settings in manually using 192.168.137.1, which is the IP assigned to the NIC as a Gateway and DNS address.

I have also had to manually set the IP for the remote control unit to 192.168.137.2. This still does not allow the Control Unit to connect to the network. The only way I have been able to get the Control unit to connect is using the DNS address for my ISP which is 68.105.28.13.

I am then able to get the remote control unit to connect to the Radio unit and I can key the microphone and transmit OK. I just cannot seem to get any audio out of the speaker which is attached to the Control unit. Audio is over SIP which is using Port 5070.

All necessary ports are being forwarded and the Windows Firewall which also has the ports forwarded is off for testing with ICS. Firewall ON works fine when using Bridging.

In the ICS setup I am getting a SIP connection to the remote control unit as the Yellow light on the remote control unit is on steady as it should be. I just don't get any audio. The system has not been tested on Windows 7 64 bit so has been no feedback on my issue.

Apparently this works just fine for everyone else with other Operating Systems. There is no need for a crossover cable for the RJ45 connections but I have tried that with no difference just to cover all bases.

Operating system:

All settings under ICS settings are checked and I added ports 5070, 11000, & 12000.

I have a Netgear wireless router connected to my Cable Modem. I am using WEP for my network.

Toshiba 18.4" laptop.

The remote control unit uses Ports 5070, 11000, 12000, 80, and 23.

Using RRC MKII.

The unit at the station end is connected via CAT 5 cable to my router and has a fixed IP.

FT-100MP MKV in the same room where I am testing.

Would WEP be an issue for the Remote Control unit via the Ethernet NIC connection? Is the control unit technically a wireless node? There is no way to use WEP on this unit that I can see.

Should a bridged Internet connection require accepting an agreement from the hotspot provider for the unit connected via Ethernet as the IP is in their subset?

I have researched and made sure that all ICS dependent services are started and I have set them to Automatic start up.

Any thoughts or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks for reading my post.

I have confirmed that there is no problem with the Control unit or jumpering.  Before opening up the unit I decided to try bridging the Wirelss to the Ethernet NIC again and I started receiving audio.

In the ICS setup I am getting SIP connection as the Yellow light is on steady.  I just don't get any audio.  The only way I am able to get the SIP connections seems to be by assigning IP, Mask, Gateway, and DNS info manually rather than using DHCP.  DHCP wants to use the 192.168.137.1 address of the NIC card, (which is assigned by Windows 7), for DNS and it will not work that way for whatever reason.

I have already discovered that the bridge connection is not going to work, at least at Starbucks as I have no way to accept their agreement with the Control unit.  ICS seems like the way to go as I believe accepting the agreement on the laptop should be sufficient as the Control unit will be running on an Ethernet NIC rather than a wireless connection.

On the other hand if it is treating the bridge as a wireless connection then why would it not also treat an ICS connection in the same manner.  Possibly because the ICS connection is on a different subnet?  It's been a very long time since I was that involved with computers to that extent and I have forgotten a lot.

I still can't figure out what is blocking the received audio from the speaker connected to the Control unit when in ICS configuration.  The audio appears to be there but I can't hear it.

Any ideas???  Anyone???  HELP!!!

Mike did not have ideas as to what could be causing my issue.

Further musing about the issue...

I am using a laptop running Windows 7 (64 bit version), by the way.

The problem I experience at Starbucks has to do with synchronizing all the
various pieces of equipment and I have yet to be able to do that as it has been
too hot and running the Air Conditioning in my Prius causes the main batteries
to drop to a very low level which then causes the A/C to cut out on me.  At 108
degrees F that gets uncomfortable rather quickly.

I returned home after my last try and confirmed that I could sync everything and
get proper operation from the system, including receiver audio.  I had to turn off WEP on my router to connect.  The XYL always decides that is a good time to check her email or surf the Internet which will no longer work at that point.

I then proceeded to try the ICS route.  I can get the unit to accept a DHCP
assigned address from the Ethernet NIC but I have not been able to get the NIC
to show a Gateway connection or DNS.  I have to enter that in manually and using
192.168.137.1 which is the IP assigned to the NIC as a Gateway and DNS address
does not allow the Control Unit to connect to the network.  I have also tried
the IP of my Router which is 192.168.0.2 with mixed results.  The only way I
have been able to get the Control unit to connect is using the DNS address for
my ISP which is 68.105.28.13.

I am then able to get the unit to connect to the Radio unit and I can key the
mike and transmit OK.  I just cannot seem to get any audio out of the speaker
attached to the Control unit.  I checked to make sure there was no sudden
problem with the speaker and it works fine connected directly to the jack where
I inject the receive audio into the Radio unit.

This is driving me crazy.  Tonight I will go back to my bridge connection which
has worked in the past, at home, although it would not allow me to connect at
Starbucks.  If that works OK then I have no idea what to try next.  VERY
FRUSTRATING!   I hate turning off my WEP on the router at home and exposing my
network but may have to try that setup again to make sure it is not a sudden
failure in the Control unit for some reason.

I would suspect a loose jumper wire internally if it had not been working after
I brought it home from my field test.  May have to check that out in any event.
All indications are that I should be receiving audio to my speaker.  Perhaps I
have a possible cause of my problem after all?  I wonder where I stored the
extra jumper wires.

Well, I finally got time to take a trip to Starbucks to try out my setup using a router as described in my prior post.

I was sitting out in the parking lot and it was 108 degrees F outside.  Equipment was strewn all across the front seats.  Sun was glaring onto the laptop screen and the mouse decided it was a good time not to work.  Needless to say things went downhill from there.

There is a lot of syncing of IPs required between the various equipment.  It got to be too much of a problem and I came home to recheck my setup.

I had to disable WEP on my router to be able to connect to the system.  Worked fine at home. Then I had to fight with the network to get everything working on WEP again.

I decided to try ICS once more time and the Ethernet NIC got an IP with no problem.  I could not get the RemoteRig Control to pick up properly through DHCP.  I had to assign it an IP in the new IP range of the Ethernet NIC.  Then it refused to connect until I set the DNS to that which the Wireless NIC was using rather than using the Ethernet NIC IP as I would expect it to do.

I tried the RJ45 cable supplied with the system and tried with a crossover cable but could not get any audio through from the rig.  I can key the PTT and transmit OK.

Anyone have a solution to this issue?

Hi Dave,

Yes, I have version 2.  I admittedly have only made a couple of contacts while testing.  Audio reports were good with the pre-amp off and I have not seen a need to make the mod at this time.  Perhaps it will be necessary once I get into full operation.

I bought this unit for travel purposes and I don't do that very often.  I will probably have more use for it as a second operating position when the xyl insists I join her in the TV room and I want to try to work a DXpedition.

XYL just had major surgery so have not had the time to take it to a hotspot to try it out now that I believe I have finally worked all the bugs out of the basic setup.  Hope to do that later this week.

Good luck with your problem.
