new computer
« on: 2014-02-24, 20:50:57 »
At the control station I am moving to a new computer.
Are there gotchas to look out for?

Hi Ken,

Since the RemoteRig system is stand alone, I am not sure what you need exactly.

I will take a guess that you are using the USB cable for the virtual COM ports. In that
case, make sure you download and install the newest version of the Microbit Setup
manager before you plug the USB cable in.

Then you go to the Windows Device Manager and see which COM port(s) was/were
issued by Windows and make sure you tell your software to use that port(s).

My ports do not include a COMPSK port.
See  the attachment.

COMFSK was the old name used for what now is called COMExtra. The name does not matter when it comes to that port's function.
Always include type of hard/software and version when asking for support.

Right, you can switch now between FSK and Winkey for that port using the serial settings.

Note that the RemoteRig documentation has not been updated for the new name.

This has been easy to do.
With that info, I think everything is working.
The biggest effort was not with Remoterig, but with moving over my DXLABS setup.
I have not found a way to control my rotor operation from a spot on DX Spotter, but that's the same as the old computer.
Control from the rotor icon works just fine.
My thanks and congratulations to you guys for such an excellent system.

I seem to have one final problem.
I am using FSK, com6.
But instead of rtty I am getting a single tone.
Is there something I may have missed?

Ken, I am not a big expert on FSK, but that problem has cropped-up on the TS-480 from time to time.
It is caused by one having a stereo plug in the TS-480's key jack. Changing this (or using an adapter)
to a mono plug solved that problem. Note that the stereo plug works fine for CW on its own, just causes
the FSK problem when you want to use that mode.

If that doesn't help you, then I will have to pass to someone with better knowledge.

Here is the part that makes no sense.

I listened to the headphone output of computer, and it dawdles ok.  So that means its is downstream from there.  Maybe a cable to the audio input of the RRC-1258.

To test that, I put the old computer back and used the same cables.  It works fine.
?????????????????????

If I am getting the correct computer audio output for  audio input to the RRC-1258 it should work!

Then I listened to the SP output from the RRC-1258 and it is one tone.

Baffled in Baltimore.

Ahhhhhh.....you are NOT running FSK, but AFSK!!!! The COM port for FSK does not use any audio
from the sound card to send, it generates it through firmware in the RRC and uses a cable between
the radio RRC I/O connector and rig to send the FSK signal.

In your case, you are using the input to the MIC, which would be a completely different setting in your
software to send AFSK (or another digital mode). You need to decide which mode you want to use to
transmit and then make sure you have the correct cables and software setting in place. Right now it
looks like you have things mixed-up.

As you can see, it is defined as RTTY.  When I completely unplug audio lines to the computer, there are no changes.
Today I am going to move the RRC Control line to other ports on the computer in case there is something sensitive there.
After that, I suppose I will indeed use AFSK instead.

(I am not sure the attach function is working)

Well Mitch, here is a new one to remember.
I switched USB ports on the computer, and everything works!
There must have been some USB3 vs. USB2 issue involved.
Now, once again, I am thrilled with the results.

Glad to hear you got it working, Ken.

A program sees "RTTY" as one mode, however there are two ways to generate tones by using
either FSK or AFSK. As far as a program is concerned, it depends upon which port/method is
used for the keying. That is why I assumed it was a software setting, i.e. the correct port must
be used. I am glad you found the right port.
