CGNAT with a 4G cellphine dongle at the Remote site?

(1/1)

G3XAQ:
I'm new here, so please be gentle. I've searched and can find no reference to issues with CGNAT preventing DDNS working at the remote site when using a 4G dongle. Does anyone have a workaround, apart from buying an expensive static-IP SIM? The reason I am asking is I have access to a site for a Remote which is in a farmer's field with only mains power and no hard-wired broadband.

Thanks, Alan G3XAQ

CGN makes it impossible to initate a connection from internet to LAN it's not directly related to DDNS. The only work around is to setup a VPN initiated from the LAN behind the CGN router. ( radio site) That can of course be done but it has to be done with dedicated routers which have support for it. I have also seen a project with raspberry Pies Google for soft ether VPN. Another problem may be that it's difficult to initiate the VPN connection as it has to be done from the Radio site. I can of course be initiated at power up but then it may consume data even when not in use. So the conclusion is probably to find a ISP which can provide public IP-addresses, free or to a resonable cost. ( it doesn't have to be a fixed IP-address which may be more expensive)

Thanks Mike.

A last newbie question. My 4G mobile service provider and my domestic broadband providers both say they support IPv6. If the router at the Remote end can speak IPv6 could this be a way to make inbound connections work, perhaps via dynamic DNS?
