pinging using DNYDNS TOOL
(1/1)
RADIOWAVES:
Could someone please tell me if I should be able to ping all the ports ie audio, sip, cmd, web svr. using the DNYDNS ping tool through my external ip address?
Thanks
Fred
KR3JA:
Fred,
You can ping the IP and see if the node is alive, but you can't ping a specific port. To see if the port is alive, you need a port scanner tool.
Pinging the SIP, CMD and Audio ports requires a UDP port scan utility - you can't "ping" them directly. Read here for more info - especially the part on UDP scanning: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Port_scanner
Try a tool like NMap which can do TCP and UDP port scanning: http://nmap.org/

Jim is correct, but I need to add one thing that has caused some people to get confused:
When you ping your DynDNS address, you land at your router. Often, the result of a ping will
be a timeout. This is because ICMP reply is often turned off by default for security reasons.
If you receive a timeout when you ping your router, you need to turn "ICMP packet reply" or
similar on. This is usually under the firewall or security settings.
