Title: Device Disconnected message
Post by: VO1HP on 2015-11-18, 14:37:08
Still trying to figure out why Microbit Setup Manager awlays shows RRC to be DEVICE DISCONNECTED.  My desktop uses Win10.
I have set new inbound and out bound rules for Setup Manager in the Win10 Firewall and I have unticked the Power Management boxes in Control Panel Device Manager for all the USB hubs.....I have even performed a refresh install of Win10 which caused the loss of most installed apps but not files.
When I unplug and plug in the USB cable I hear the tone indicating that a device has been attached.  Using FW 2.87 in the RRC and latest 1.28Version of Setup manager.

When I run Setup manager I get the DEVICE DISCONNECTED message in the FW/HW tab .  If I click on Net Info/find and then click Find Devices
the program finds the RRC and I can re-enter the correct IP.  I can also browse to the home page of the RRC by clicking BROWSE and also by entering the IP
in the address bar in the EDGR browser.  So the RRC is connected to the network OK but apparently no to the PC via USB....have tried back panel and front panel USB ports.  Have also configured port forwarding in the router for the IP and port 80.

What else should I look for ??   Anybody have any clue?....In the listing of services running SERVICES.MSC  there a very long lost of features to ENABLE or DISBALE etc...I wonder if there is something there that is not running that is preventing recognition of the RRC....have no clue what to look for.

It seems that Setup Manager somehow does not get notifications from Windows telling about connected/disconnected USB devices. That will cause the behaviour you see. The firewall has nothing to do with that, neither do you need rules in it, nor is there any service which has something with that to do (unless other USB devices work ok).

I assume you have tried starting the Setup Manager with and without the RRC connected? I also assume that you do not have more than one RRC/WS connected to the PC at the same time?

Exactly the same here...Win10 and last FW........ Device disconnected
FW/HW version and Setup does not work
FW update and Net info/find works

And to be sure: When attaching the RRC a "HID-compliant vendor-defined device" appears under "Human Interface Devices" in Device Manager?

Yes that is correct...one more Usb unit appears

Only one RRC connected to the Win 10 PC.  Also have tried both ways...starting the Microbit manager with and without the RRC connected via USB cable.  Same result each time.....each RRC is connected I can hear the alert tone but always DEVICE DISCONNECTED.

it's obviously that something is different on your Win 10 PCs. If it worked that bad for me it would be easy to track it down. I would need your help to find what it is that goes wrong by providing you with a Setup Manager with more information about what happens "under the hood". Would that be ok?

That is OK for me.

Went back to 1.27 and it works fine on win 10.....tried 1.28 again but no luck.

Installed 1.28 on an old laptop with Vista but not working there either.
1.25 and 1.27 works.

I also went back to Setup Manager 1.27 and now RRC shows as CONNECTED.  1.28 not working with my Win 10 machine.

That is truly strange! Between version 1.27 and 1.28 there are no changes that should cause what both of you are seeing. But one thing has changed, I upgraded the development environment from Visual Studio 2012 to 2013, and maybe that somehow is connected to the problem. If so then it will be hard to figure out what is going wrong without having access to a computer that behaves like yours. I will start by adding some logging functions for you to test as soon as possible while looking for a computer behaving like yours.

I have a new version with more information about the USB handling in Setup Manager. It will show a pop-up error message if subscribing to the USB connect/disconnect events fails at startup.

You can find the installation here:

www.remoterig.com/downloads/MicrobitSetupManager_v1.29_2015-12-07-TEST.zip (http://www.remoterig.com/downloads/MicrobitSetupManager_v1.29_2015-12-07-TEST.zip)

Edit: I changed my mind about an 'exe file' only since it's more than one file that have changed.

I've made yet another version with more changes, for ex an updated USB library. It would be most useful if you who have that "device not detected" problem could give bot 1.29 and this 1.30 version I try and see if it works better:

Not sure it has been brought up before, but do you have a 32 or 64 bits Windows 10?

Also, could you check that hidapi.dll exists in the installation folder?

Better late than never as we say here in Sweden! ;)

I think I found what caused the hdiapi.dll not found error message. It was a missing DLL file. Please give this version a try:

Thank you for your help!

Great that version 1.30(not 1.3) seems to have fixed the "disconnected" issue! (I updated a third party library we are using so that might have been what made it work)
