Title: char by char option
Post by: rockyjones on 2012-04-13, 03:56:01
Roland, thank for the new version (1.5,1.51).  It looks like you have cleaned the software up nicely!  Many programs that didn't work previously now work including N1MM rotor control software.

I have a question about the "char by char" option.  This selection says "avoid this" but if we shouldn't use it what are we to use to control a rotator or other serial device?

Thanks,

Hi

The disadvantage with "char by char " is that it need lot of bandwidth, for every char sent, 16 char are sent over the Internet. So for that reason it's better to use an other mode if it's possible. For controlling a rotor it doesn't matter as very little data is sent and only when turning the the antenna. But using "char by char" for radio control when tuning the VFO can give huge data package which can affect the audio if the bandwidth is limited.

Maybe instead of having "(avoid this)", you should write "(warning: uses high bandwidth)"
instead? This would make it clearer what the possible issue is.
