Title: RR DDNS Database not working for me
Post by: n6xi on 2013-08-28, 06:58:26
I followed the instructions on pages 58-59 of Rev. A32 of the manual "Remoterig dynamic dns service" to set up the Dynamic DNS settings page of my Remote RRC." I got an Own host name string of xxxxxxxx.ddns.remoterig.com and a Username and Password. When I attempt to use this string as the SIP contact string on the Control RRC, it fails to connect. If I use the actual external IP address, the RRCs connect and function properly. Using the Web site ddns status tester, I get "xxxxxxxx not found!" Is the xxxxxxxx... string formed locally? If so, how do I get it into the database? What might I be doing wrong?

Thanks & 73,
Rick N6XI

Hi check your status page in the Radio-RRC, I guess you will see that the DNS  fails and the DNS function need to work otherwise the DDNS will not be updated. Probably the DNS ip number is not correct.

The DDNS databas post for your RRC will be created automatically when the RRC connect, you do not need to do any manual registration

Rick,

You can also verify when it last updated at: http://ddns.remoterig.com/status/

Mike, the DNS status page for the Remote RRC reports "OK, remoterig.com = 193.202.110.185"

Mitch, http://ddns.remoterig.com/status/ reports only "xxxxxxxx not found!"

Hi Rick,

This is another tool that you can use to determine when a problem began to occur,
since the RRC messages are sometimes cryptic. In your case, it indicates that it
never worked to begin with.

I have the same problem. Everything is ok with dyndns, but with RR DDNS doesn't work.

At the DDNS remoterig status web, appears updated in August 2012, but since then, my IP has changed, but this change is not updated (I don't know why).

It's because your RRC have not updated the DDNS database. Probably because the DNS ip is wrong if you look at the status page in the Radio-RRC you will probably see the reason.

Thanks Mike:

I tried with several DNS IP's and with the same result with all of them.

If the DNS IP was wrong, I vas be able to connect with dyndns? Why is everything OK with dyndns and not with Remoterig DDNS?

You do not say what the status page says

Also let us know if you are using a fixed internal IP address, or DHCP. I think I have found a
bug with fixed IP addresses and DNS servers, so I can let Mike know and give you a work
around if this is the case. If you are using DHCP, then I guess you have a router problem.

You don't say what status page do you want to know (Radio side or Control side) and you don't answer to my last two questions...

Thanks Mitch: I'm using fix internal IP in both sides...I can try DHCP at control side, but I can't try it at Radio side because I'm using DMZ.

Thanks

The same result with RR DDNS....

But I don't know why it works with dyndns and doesn't work with RR DDNS.

I have this trouble since I bought it, I've never could use RR DDNS.

I've just tried with DHCP at control side and still the same.

Thanks

Hi Carlos,

This would only concern the radio side, since that is where the dynamic DNS problem is. What I usually
do is to use DHCP and bind the internal IP address to the MAC address in the router. The effect is the
same as fixing the IP from the RRC, but one has less problems with the router.

Anyway, here is the work around: enter the following as the DNS server in the IP config: 8.8.8.8
Let us know if this helps or not.

Mike, I have had a few cases where the RRC just refused to get to the internet. Although it is most
likely a router bug, it always has happened when someone was using a fixed internal IP address and
was fixed either by switching to DHCP, or be using a different (external) DNS server. I am not sure if
this bug can be solved in the RRC firmware or not.

You can see that dns is not Ok . Check the dns IP, often it's the same as gateway IP but not always

A working dns connection is needed for the ddns update to work

Thanks Mitch for your polite attention:

I'm using this DNS from google (8.8.8.8). I've tried with several servers even the one that uses the router and always the same: dyndns OK, Remoterig DDNS not OK.

Next weekend I'll be able to change to DHCP in the radio side router following your explanation. I'll let you know.

I don't know if this helps:

At radio side, the RRC is conected by ethernet to a Nanostation (in Bridge Mode) and from this Nanostation I connect to the router. It's a wifi connection to the router, not a ethernet connection.

I've just realized why it works with dyndns.org:

It works because I update the IP using the dyndns updater software installed in a pc located at radio Site. Therefore, the problem is the same (with dyndns or with RR ddns) but is working with dyndns because the IP is the real updated IP.

Is there any possibility to update the RR DDNS IP using some kind of software? (like the dyndns updater).

Thanks, 73's

I am not sure what that would bring, since the whole point of the RemoteRig technology
is to not to have to have a PC running at the station.

If you have a router at the radio QTH can't you set it up to update DynDns ? Theoretically you can use the Remoterig ddns settings also in the router but most routers do not allow you to use a free ddns

Hi there:

The router is a shared router and I don't want to set it up to update dyndns. Sometimes I use that pc remotely and dyndns is updated at start thanks to dyndns updater software.

Anyway, next weekend I'm going to drive there and I'm going to try using DHCP instead of fix local IP (as Mitch said).

Mike, I send you an skype invitation. If you want to connect to my radioRRC via telnet, (It will be great)  I can give you the IP and password by skype.

Thanks

OK I do not understand why, but it's not my business. One of the software guys will look at your RRC as soon as there is time. But as Mitch say, probably it's a router issue and if so we may not be able to do anything about it.

That is build in your RR. It seems your radio RR is not able to contact the RemoteRig DDNS server as you get: "Dynamic DNS status   Unknown". Possibly you have not configured a usable DNS 8.8.8.8 (or something like 192.168.0.1)  in the network setup of your radio RR either using Setup manager or in RRC-1258 MkII: Radio [xxxxx] > IP settings > DNS server.

Thanks Palle:

I know that is build in the RR, but I only want to know if it can be possible. I know it is a nonsense...

I've tried with different DNS including the google server 8.8.8.8 (you can read at the beginning of the post) with no success.

The protocol for updating the ddns is the same as for dyndns so if you find a pc-client software where you are free to use  any ddns it should work.

I'm trying to update my RR DDNS Host using several android-client dynamic dns and doesn't work.

All of them tell me "connection to https://ddns.remoterig.com refused"

I don't know what happens...

About this. Is it somehow reproducible?
Title: Re: RR DDNS Database not working for me
Post by: dj0qn on 2013-10-09, 08:53:43
That is something I have now come across about five times. I was able to solve it
by having them put 8.8.8.8 into the DNS field, rather than the router's IP address.

As for reproducing it; I will try to remember to document it the next time. It may be
a problem related to specific routers, I don't know. It is a real problem I can
confirm, but under what circumstances it occurs is going to take a few months of
tracking to figure out.

Hi there:

Next weekend I'm going to try it. I'll let you know if it works or not.

In my case, the router is a Zyxel P660, but the connection between the RRC and the router is made through a Nanostation M2 in Bridge Mode (wifi connection).

I think that SIP is blocked (default) in the Nanostation. Next weekend I'm also going to disabled that blockage in the Nanostation.

Must be the RRC at Control Side switched ON or doesn't matter?

I see at the Info page: DNS 80.58.61.250 but at IP setting I have DNS server 8.8.8.8

What is the reason for this difference?

HUUUUUURRRRAAAAAAA... I GET IT

Finally, after a lot of testing, I get it.

I changed all my network, I set the nanostation as a router (before was a bridge) and that way, the DNS status has changed to OK, remoterig.com=193.202.xxx.xxx

Now is working either with fix IP or with DHCP (doesn't matter).

I hope tomorrow, when I'll get home, not to have problems with DMZ configuration.

Thanks Mitch, 73's
