Title: TS 480 - Mic doesn't work - PLEASE!!!
Post by: IZ0JOJ on 2016-07-24, 23:03:44
Hello somebody help a poor ham who's trying to transmit via remorerig with his KENWOOD T 480?

I have TS 480 configured with remote rig and... everything is working except MIC.
Everytime I try to transmit, the led PTT becomes red but... I cannot modulate : the frequency shifts up of khz ...

What's going on?
I saw the instructions : it looks like I did everything well. The jumper 1 is the only one OFF (thing is out).
The other 3 JMP are with the thing on.

Thanks in advance

Did you set the red strappings per the manual? That is where the microphone and PTT
wiring is defined, not the jumpers.

If you did, then double-check them with an ohmmeter to make sure they are truly connected.
Also make sure that you didn't wire the socket "upside down" and put pin 1 on the bottom.

 ??? Dear DJ0QN,
Many thanks in advance for your help.

> First of all can you clarify for me:
JMP1 jumper one : is with the strap on or off? This jumper (on the Control-RRC only) as written on the instructions should be with the strap OFF (WITHOUT) for a KENWOOD TS 480.

And JMP2 ? As well should with the strap OFF (without).

Thanks

JMP1 is for bias to the microphone. Standard Kenwood mikes do not require bias, so it must stay off.
If you are using an Icom mike or other one that requires bias, you can set it to on if needed.

JMP2 has nothing to do with the jumpers, it is the voltage provided to the control panel. The TS-480
needs more, so this must be on.

Only the red straps define the microphone and PTT, so this is where you must concentrate your efforts.

Dear Mitch,
Many thanks for your answer.

Okay I confirm JMP1 is WITHOUT the strap
JMP5 is with the strap.

The microphone is the standard one the comes out with the Kenwood TS 480

Here my straps > can you confirm everything is okay?

You have only confirmed that the jumpers are ok, but not the 5 red straps. Have you tested them to make sure that they are ok?

Hello mitch,
Cannot you see my pic I just took?
If you see it, do you agree they are in the correct places? No inversione i believe.
What do you think and how should I test them?

Sorry for stupid questions

I just came home and can see the photo on my computer. I see two things wrong:

1) There is no strap installed between the pins numbered "3 and MIC <--" in the diagram, you must have
forgotten it.

2) The straps for most of the rest are not all fully in their sockets. I don't think that the straps
for "5 & PTT <--" as well as "6 & GND" will work at all that far out of the socket, but some others may also
not work.

Make sure these are pushed all the way in: use a needle nose pliers and hold it just at the end of the
insulation, then push gently down until it fully goes in. Do not use your fingers. If a strap gets bent,
throw it away and use a new one. If not sure, use an ohmmeter to make sure there is contact. Also make
sure BOTH RRC's have their straps installed, you only sent one photo so I can't see.

Hello Mitch,
Many thanks for your help.
I really appreciate it.

Sorry...but... I still don't understand.
Please see hereby a zoom on the previous image I posted : I installed the strap between the pins numbered "3 and MIC <--"

Is not this one?

I am confused. Sorry.
This is the diagram from the instructions I followed.

Many thanks if you can help!

Yes, that is the correct one. I only counted four straps on your photo last night, so one of them is
missing for sure. Even if you had it installed, it would not work, because the straps are not all making
contact with the socket.

Hello!
I found a previous post by HB9EMS in this remoterig forum who had a similar problem and he solved this:

"The cable AUX/MIC-connector from the Radio-RRC and
the MIC-connector from the TS-480."

...can somebody clarify this for me?

Many thanks

That one is too obvious to me to have been the problem, but sometimes people really don't read the
manual. Yes, there must be a cable (ethernet cable works fine) between the TS-480 body and radio
RRC's MIC jack.

If you really didn't install that cable, then that would be a cause, although you still need the proper red straps
and to make sure the straps are making contact. Otherwise, it still won't work!

Dear Mitch,
Thanks for your answer.

Yes, I installed the cable but is a standard ethernet cable. I thought I should have change this cable! If you can confirm to me that there this STANDARD cable I bought on internet is okay ... I am happy.

...mumble mumble I still do not understand where could be the mistake.

Hi Antonio,

Yes, it is a standard ethernet patch cable like the one included in the RemoteRig box.

To find the problem, focus on the red straps. Use an ohmmeter to locate a strap that is not
making contact with the socket. Make sure all straps are installed, you last photo had one
missing.

Dear Mitch, :D
Problem partially solved.

It was not a problem of straps :-)
It was the ethernet cable not working very well !!

Now when I push to talk...I got the red light...and frequency stay the same (no up no down) BUT I do not have modulation!
I mean - no power output - no modulation - no bar - nothing is moving !

Can you "help"?

Thanks

Antonio,

If there is no SSB audio, then the problem is still likely with your red straps. Did you control both
RRC's to make sure all straps are installed and making contact in their sockets?
