Title: CW Keying issue
Post by: oh2xx on 2011-07-25, 23:17:25
Hi All,

Even though I have been happily working quite a lot of QSOs on CW with my remote setup there is a keying problem I would like to fix. My keying seems to be right when listening the CW side tone but when monitoring my transmission on the band with CW Skimmer I can see too much of missing dots or dashes and sometimes too long a dash. This happens with the internal keyer and when keying with computer. If I send 3xCQ and 3xOH2XX I can see almost every time at least one missing dot or dash to be more precise.

I have ADSL line on both ends. The remote side's line is not as stable as my home connection so the ping value varies between 32...70 ms. When testing the line there are sometimes packet loses but not too much. I have tried with different settings but have not found any cure for the problem. Any ideas?

Some more testing this morning. This time the CW is flawless and ping time seems to be 29...32 ms. Last night it was 70ms on average. Correlation here or something else? Is there any other parameter than the "Key delay ms" to tune here? Tried it up to 70ms yesterday but that did not cure the problem. Now it is back to 0.

When using CW packet loss is not acceptable, it will be errors if a CW packet is lost. Jitter is acceptable as long as it's within the "key delay" settings. Set "key delay" well over the longest ping time, try 150 ms in this case.

Yes,

Packet loss was the problem here due to RFI in the ADSL line especially when working on 160m. I just installed a 3G connection yesterday and all my problems were solved. UMTS900 rules!

Kari -

What kind of ping times do you get when using a 3G connection? I am getting an average of about 190ms...

Also, what cw key lf and delay settings are you using?

Thanks,

Hi John,

The ping time here is 70ms on average and I have CW lf and key delays set to 0.

I have similar problem with CW. My pings varies from 70 to 190 ms. I put up keying-delay for 250 (Maximum) but still have a lot of missing dits and dots. Is there any settings I can play with?

I talked to ISP and they stated that this difference is within their quality standarts so they were not very helpful. I use ADSL line at home and Wimax on remote side.

Key delay set to 250 meaning 250 ms buffering before transmitting, that should handle ping times up to 500 ms. 250 ms to radio and 250 ms back to control. If the CW is still garbled with so long buffering it's diffcult to solve, maybe there are packages which is totally lost also.

I recommend to always use a delay of at least 50 ms even on normal connections

Kari RFI could be solved with the new RFI filter they are selling now (microbit)
or put some cores on the cable from the router to the dsl modem
cores solved my problem.
