General discussion forum / No SELECT and SETUP buttons on RC-1216H...

I just put up a SteppIR DB18 for my Remote Rig/TS-480 remote station.  I was in the process of ordering the RC-1216H when I realized that it does not have the SELECT and SETUP buttons and access to the menu screens on it's webserver.  I would rather use the RC-1216H for simple access to it's webserver from any computer with a browser, but would consider having a dedicated PC with a physical serial port for local control.

How can I access the CREATE, MODIFY, etc., functionality remotely?  I want to have full control of the SDA 100 remotely, except the AUTOTRACK functionality that I understand is not yet available.

I was contacted about configuring an HF remote station for a ham that went through deep brain surgery for Parkinsons and has 2 leads from his brain that are causing discomfort around high HF RF fields.  The ham that contacted me wants to rig up an HF remote station at his home for the ham with Parkinsons to operate remotely.

The ham that contacted me has a Flex 3000, Icom 7000, and Yaesu 857D, any one of which he would be willing to use as the remoted rig at his house connected to one of his existing HF antennas.  He also has 10Mbit/1Mbit internet.

I have an extra RRC-1258 MkII, S/N 2560, radio box and a RRC-Micro/PC-Client that I would be willing to donate to the effort.

The ham with Parkinsons has 10Mbit/1Mbit internet and a computer.

What combination of existing equipment do you recommend to get the remote station up and going quickly?  The other ham and I would also entertain purchasing other equipment, especially since it would be much simpler for the ham with Parkinsons to operate a radio with a remoted head.

General discussion forum / Powering Control Box in a vehicle with 13.8 Vdc?

I am installing a Kenwood TS-480HX in my pickup, mainly for use with one of the motorized HF antennas.  I have considered including an RRC-1258MKII Control Box with the WiFi Interface in my pickup and providing internet to the Control Box with my cellphone, when stopped at a location with a good 4G signal.  Any problems with supplying power to the Control Box directly from the pickup battery/alternator that is running at a nominal voltage of 13.8 VDC?

As a side note...I built a T-bracket for the motorized HF antenna that I will be mounting near the center of the bed and at the level of the bed rails in my pickup.  I have an electric linear actuator mounted to the T-bracket that will allow me to stand the antenna up and lower it down to a near horizontal position in about 6 seconds from within the cab of my pickup.

I run a TS-480 head remotely with the Remote Rig system from my house that is only 4.14 statute miles from the tower by utilizing a 5 GHz Ubiquiti bridge on a completely line-of-sight link.  Occasionally, the cable internet service is erratic causing dropped packets and at times hanging up my system.  Is there such a thing as a link that communicates with IP that will function with the Remote Rig boxes without the need for actual internet?

I was very pleased to see everything work on the first try, but then discovered a couple of strange problems...

I do not recieve any audio through my USB headset until I move the audio slider in HRD to something greater than 50 and then back to a more normal level of 25 or so.

I am experiencing frequent timeouts that stop operation while running from my wireless router with 15 Mbps download and 1.5 Mbps upload.  I am currently attempting to turn off all power management routines in my Samsung Series 9 laptop running 64 bit Windows 7.  Any other suggestions?

I realize that I am very spoiled with the near perfect operation and no detectable latency of my remoted TS-480 head on my own LAN by using my own 5.8 GHz internet bridge from my tower location 4.14 statute miles away.  I am experiencing about a second of delay with the RRC-Micro.  What settings are recommended for reducing latency?

General discussion forum / Android cellphone control of TS-480 with Remote Rig system?

I am currently using the Remote Rig system with the head of a TS-480 at my home to access my distant tower and have ordered the RRC-Micro for use when traveling.  I also ordered the Remoteshack system to experiment with station access from my Android cellphone.  Is there any talk of adding Android cellphone access in some way to the Remote Rig system?

I currently have the Remoteshack system functioning with Skype running on a local PC.  The only incompatibility problem I have so far is that the serial rig control functionality of Remoteshack only works at 4800 baud and my Tokyo Hy-Power amplifier communicates with my TS-480 at 9600 baud to provide bandswitching data.

General discussion / Serial Y-Cable for TS-480 and HL-1.5KFX

I have been using the Remote Rig system with the head of a TS-480 located at my home to access my tower from 4.14 statute miles away.  I ordered the RRC-Micro for use when I travel and I am in the process of getting everything ready to integrate the RRC-Micro, when it arrives.

The body of the TS-480 is currently connected to a Tokyo Hy-Power HL-1.5KFX amplifier with a straight serial cable to provide band switching data to the amplifier.  I understand that I need a serial Y-cable to also provide control of the radio with HRD through virtual serial port COM2 of the Remote Rig radio box, when using the RRC-Micro.  I ordered the Tokyo Hy-Power KIC-II serial Y-cable, but have determined that it only provides bandswitching data to the amplifier when HRD is running on a local PC.  I assume that HRD is pulling a line high and enabling the optoisolation feature of the KIC-II to function?  Since I don't want to depend on a computer running HRD at the radio end of the link, I need to either modify the KIC-II cable or provide another cable solution.

Is anyone familiar with this setup to know whether I need anything special other than a straight serial Y-cable?  Do I need to wire my own so that one of the lines is not connected?

I am using the TS-480 control head remotely with the Remote Rig system and would like to operate PSK31.  I already have a Tigertronics SignaLink USB, the appropriate cable with connector to plug into the 6 pin connector on the TS-480 body, and a computer at the radio end that operates an EchoLink node.  I would assume that I connect the SignaLink to the TS-480 body and the computer at the remote site and use some type of remote access software to access that computer remotely?

Anyone using something different than the stock hand microphone with their TS-480 for remote use with the Remote Rig system?

I stayed inside and played radio today while it was snowing outside.  A couple of different stations played a clip of my audio back over the radio for me to hear.  I thought my audio sounded a little bit muffled with the stock hand microphone, which started me thinking about enhancing my audio quality with a replacement microphone.  Maybe one of the models from Heil Sound?

I am using Dynamic DNS for the Remote Rig radio box.  I added a Webswitch to turn power on/off to an amplifier.  I am not sure how to implement Dynamic DNS for both the radio box and the Web-Switch.

"...You need to register a account (free) at www.dyndns.com to start with. After that you enter the same information at the Internal DynDNS web page in the RRC. "DynDNS check time" sets how often the IP-check should be done. DynDNS says it should be 10 minutes or longer. If you put 0 the DynDNS client is not activated. There are other providers of the same service but the WEB-Switch only supports DynDNS today. If you have more than one WEB-Switch or RRC-1258 at the same place DynDNS should only be active in one of the units..."

The way I interpret the above information is that you enter the same DynDNS host name, webpage user name, and webpage password into the Web-Switch that you used for the Remote Rig radio box and then set the check time to 0 for the Web-Switch so that DynDNS will only be activated in the Remote Rig radio box and not both the radio box and the Web-Switch.  Is that correct?

I am forwarding ports to the Remote Rig Radio Box, which is setup with a Static IP on my LAN.  How can I also forward ports to my Webswitch and IP Camera if my router only has port forwarding to one IP?

I finally gave up on using 3G as an internet source for the control box and installed a wireless bridge to link my home (6.6 km).  I am now very impressed with the operation of the Remoterig system!!!
