Hi Guys
I am looking for early days Remote Controlled Radio Sations used by hams. This is  for a presentation. I read somewhere about a W6 who installed servo motors in a Collins S-Line and controlled his station located up in the hill in the same property. Wires did the  controlling and audio transport.
If any of you have  records about these attempts, I would appreciate an input.
Please use my direct email: fred.py2xb@gmail.com

Thanks in advance Fred

Hi Mike > Thanks feedback. I thought I would receive such an answer !

My remote station is in a rural area. I have not too many choises of internet provider. The one I have uses dedicated radios for the last mile. The RTT from the control point is quite OK (35 ms or even less). The Jitter may be the issue ( above 30ms).
I am talking to the provider if they can trace the route and find something different, because I did not have this issue before.
One question: I have notice a sensible improvement with Key Delay = 250ms. It would not make sense to increase this limit  to 500ms for instance? Maybe half second delay would be too much, but I rather have a large delay than a bad CW.

Best Regards Fred

Hello Guys, Hello Mike

I am having an issue when sending CW to the remote side. The CW is truncated. If it was before it was not easily noticeable. BTW I use TS480S with remote head at the Control Side.

The internet connection at the remote end is the same and it is good.  At the remote side all is wired, no WI-FI. I have no issue with the receiving audio at the Control side.  SSB transmission works fine as well. BTW I have tested CW sending with two ISPs at the control side and there is no difference.

I have increased the Key Delay to the maximum (250ms) at the Control RRC.  It improved the CW transmission but I still have dropouts or some hang-like effect as a longer dash.

Any ideas about what can be done parameter wise or what to investigate? Many thanks  Fred,  PY2XB

Ciao Antonio. I should have shared the outcome of my problem here. Sorry I didn't.

Per Mike's answer and my findings, I realized that the modems connect and this has nothing to do with the radio. So,  when the power button is pressed on the radio's head, the RRC Radio turns the TS480 on and it is expected that the radio turns on.  If the  radio is on,  then the head communicates with the radio and  normal radio functioning starts. If the radio at the remote side does not turn on, nothing happens.
So,  If the radio does not turn on (power supply not connected for instance), what you and I described happens.

In my case I had replaced a TS480S with a TS480HX. I had to make a power cable with two power connectors to energize the radio. It happened that this cable had a contact issue. In fact the 13.8V DC to the radio was intermittent.

So, again, the modens were connecting and the radio was not energized. Of course I had to drive to the remote site to discover that.

Maybe you should make a similar investigation.

Best regards Fred PY2XB

Ok Mike. I will have to investigate that further. Regards Fred

Sorry guys. I have meixed up topics

Hi Mike. Thanks
I am using a Microtik router at the remote site. I have done port forwarding on everything. Do you mean RCC Radio Webserver ? I have it on port 8000 and I do port for.wading 8000 external to 8000 internal. Is that what you mean ?  Please explain how  that would interfere in the beahaivor of the radio conncetion ?
BTW I have rebooted MikroTik remote router as well.

Thank you

Hi Mile+

I have been using my remote station for about 2yrs without any major issue. I have recently set up another station at home in order to test back-up items. I have tested successfully another TS480 radio with another pair of Remoterig modems. Then I decided to replace the TS480 in the actual remote site with the backup TS480 that I have tested at home. For few days no issue and recently I started to have the following issue, that I am not sure if it is related to the TS480 swap:
RRC Radio Modem connects to RRC Control Modem OK. However, I cannot turn on the remote TS480. When Pressing the head’s ON/OFF button the yellow LED on the AUX/MIC turns on, I hear the characteristic “bip”  but the head does not light.
I have made many tests, but no conclusion. I have printed relevant configuration/status on both sides which is in the attached PDF.
Any help is appreciated. Many thanks Fred

CGN is getting more and more common, even in calbled internet. Every modification my Internet provider does,  worries me.

Mike, I have Public IPV4 and IPV6 at home. I thought IPV6 was going to solve the problem and stop CGN wave. It seems not.

Does Remoterig support IPV6 or will support it ?

Good the issue is solved Marvin. Fred

Hi Marvin. I did. I have a software quicklag that  turns off everything in the remote site.

After receiving Mike's input. I made the folowing test: I disconnected Control RCC from the power supply. So, at the control site nothing was on. Then I got to the remote NUC computer using Anydesk. Then I just powered the TS480  at the remote site (nothing else)  and I have started MSHV on the NUC  computer. The trasceiver started to work normally, same  as if the head was connected.

Per TS480 CAT manual, the PS command, which I believe it is the CAT command that Mike mentioned, works like this

Parameters:
P1
0: Power OFF (The transceiver’s CPU is in active mode.)
1: Power ON
9: Power OFF (The transceiver’s CPU is in sleep mode.)
When the transceiver is turned OFF and P1=9, a dummy
data must be sent to the TS-480 to wake up the CPU.
For example, send a string of “; ; ; ; PS1;” to turn the
transceiver ON. If you use a hyper terminal program that
comes with Windows to control the transceiver, disable the
flow control in the program.

So, for a reason that I do not know yet, the CPU is in active mode and any CAT command turns the radio on. I need to investigate what puts the Radio's CPU in the acitve mode. It is not me ! Maybe MSHV or WSJT-X.

However the "no head" operation does not happen all the time. I guess it does not work when the CPU is not active.

So It seems I understood why the radio turns on. What I have not figured out is what puts the CPU in the active state.

As you use a similar set up, you may make a test and see what you get.

Thnaks for the input. Fred

Mike thanks quick answer

I am only using CAT to interface Digital modes Software. The Digital Mode SW as MSHV or WSJT-x only deals with CAT Frequency commands.
The weird thing is that sometimes the radio fires up without the head on sometimes doesn’t. I have not yet understood in what circumstances the radio turns on without the head. The fact is that normally the head must be on.
Per your explanation it seems that here is a CAT command that turns the radio on. Is it the case?
I will investigate this more, however any extra input is appreciated.

**Sorry if that matter has been answered/explained in the past. I have not found any thread about it**

Hello Mike+all

I have been using  Remoterig 1258 with TS-480S for about 2 years in my current remote site. The TS-480S control head is connected thru the RCC unit as it should. I am glad with the overall results.

My remote set-up diagram and photos can be seen in my QRZ.COM page.

When I travel I take the Control  head and the RRC unit with me. Once I was in the airport and I a new entity showed up on six meters. I fired up the remote station using my Android phone and I could work the station. This was on FT8. Then I realized that the control head was in my back pack along with the RRC unit. So, I was able to turn-on the TS-480S without the head, only with the 1258 Radio unit connected to the transceiver’s body in the remote side.

I have not figured out when and how it happens, but sometimes the TS-480s works without the head in the same situation described above.

A friend of mine who has a similar setup with IC-7100 described the same thing. On the other day, he was working his remote site and the head was not turned on.

Mike, although this does not affect the station operation, I would like to know why (and when) it happens, given that normally a TS-480S does not fire up without the control head.

Thanks and Best regards to all

Hi Marvin

I use the TS-480S in my remote site. I have two optional filters in it (CW and SSB). I can put then in and out normally in the controll head.
I would suggest you to take the control head to the remote site and test it locally. There should be no difference if the head is local or remote. The TS480S senses if the filters are installed or not. As far as I can remember there is no menu option to configure then. So it seems that your TS-480S are not aware that the filter is inserted, for some reason.

Take good care Fred PY2XB

For documentation purposes, let me make  quick summary about the private emails I have exchanged with Mikael.

First of all, this post is related to the "Antenna Swich AS 1289"  not the the Webswitch. Mikael explained that the control board is the same.  However, of course,  the firmware is different.
I checked with him that I have corretly connected the sensor to Bus B. The AS1289 comes without connector for this purpose. I have soldered a connector to make the sensor connection easier.

Mikael tested the sensor in-house and he confirmed it should work. However it did not work for me. So the conclusion is that I am using a counterfeit DS18B20, which seems not to be 100% adehent to the specifications. Per Mikael explanation, a real Dallas device must be used.

I checked on the Internet that the majority of devices offered on eBay, Alliexpress and similar are chinese counterfeit DS18B20.

Well, at this point I am in a quest to find a real DS18B20, which seems only to be available in the distrubutors like Digikey & Mouser, far from my reach.

John (AD8J) thanks for your input. Mikael, I really appreciated your attention to this matter. Fred PY2XB
