Hi Mike,

The problem is not that something new is needed, but the existing modes
add an extra dit. I know that Thomas DL7AV and Simon DJ4MZ have both
had issues, so maybe they can help you fix the problem. I haven't tried
CW yet with the newest firmware, maybe it has been fixed. Perhaps
Thomas and Simon can give their inputs after updating their firmware.

Has there been any further progress on fixing this problem with the
keyer? It makes the internal keyer pretty much useless until this problem
has been solved.

I arrived home in Munich this past weekend, and have been trying out the new
profiles feature with the two sites I currently am using.

It appears to work very well and I have had no problems at all. Just what was
needed! Thanks again!

No, that is what it is set to now and doesn't make a difference.

I have tried "Auto", "Auto, prefer 10 Mbit", and "100FDX'.

Should I switch to half duplex? Would that make sense?

Hi Uwe,

I have never been able to completely solve the problem. It appears that the RRC
is very sensitive to anything else in the network that generates a lot of traffic, so
the best method is to make sure everything is off when using RemoteRig.

I found the main problem on the station side, which only has 1Mb upload: I have
two IP cameras for monitoring. When I turn them off, most noise is gone. On the
remote side, I need to make sure nothing is generating traffic, including web browsers(!).

We are in the process of making a large installation for several users, and early tests show
the same problem, especially short interruptions every minute or two. It will be difficult to
resolve this, since it is located on a remote mountaintop, but we will try. I suspect also a
camera located there, which is on a different subnet. I am not sure how everything is connected,
since I don't have control over that network. It will be a challenge, I'm afraid.

Hi Paul,

What you are describing is what I mentioned: ethernet is very "noisy", generating lots
of birdies and other RF garbage everywhere. It comes through the switch into the
cables and radiates all over the place. It has nothing to do with galvanic issues.
So therefore replacing an ethernet infrastructure with wireless in the shack is not
a bad idea in this regard.

That's a good question, Paul. I am not really sure, since this device only runs
in bridge mode, as far as I can tell. Other devices can be switched between
bridge and router mode. You could install another (larger) wireless router on
the other end as a solution.

My personal opinion is that you are looking for a solution without a problem. I
have not seen that kind of problem with ethernet before. It is however very
common to have ethernet birdies caused by a network, which that would eliminate.
I have also seen devices blown-up by lightning strikes that came over the
ethernet cables.

The best portable solution that I have found is the Netgear WNCE2001:
http://www.netgear.com/products/home/wireless-adapters/high-performance/WNCE2001.aspx

This is very small and light weight, even running off of the computer's USB port.

That is GREAT news, Jan! Thanks to you and the developers on moving so
quickly on this request.

I am waiting to board my plane for a long vacation, so testing from my side
will have till wait until January. I am sure the others will enjoy the new
profile feature. I will need this feature as soon as I return to install eight
RRC's.

I wish you and the RemoteRig team happy holidays and a successful 2011!

  • Windows driver to access the two COM ports at the remote side without having to connect them via two serial cables on the control side

Simon, you can buy the PC Client and get this functionality now ;-)

I agree, the keyer drives me crazy with the extra dit. I can't believe that this would be that hard to fix.

That is great news, Jan! That will make things much easier for us to
implement multiple RemoteRig installations. I will begin in January with
eight users on one system, some of use already use other installations.

P.S.: the RemoteRig software AND hardware are great!

Thanks, Mike, that's what I originally thought, but the new directions appear
to explain this the other way around. Maybe because I am a native English
speaker, I have trouble understanding the directions ;-)

I assume that the settings in the RRC are correct, or is there anything I need
to be aware of there as well?

I will try again tomorrow evening in my other QTH.

The RemoteRig guys brought out a cool feature in 2.28 that (as far as I understand)
should allow a the rig's CAT to "loop through" the RRC and out again, as well as to
allow the remote RRC or PC Client to use this CAT at the same time.

We tried this yesterday with a TS-480 and SPE Expert, but couldn't get it to work.
Although I tried various settings, I probably screwed something-up. Here is the scenario:

- Connected TS-480 CAT port to COM1 on RRC
- Connected SPE to COM2 on RRC
- Set radio RRC COM1 to (new) mode 6: CAT to COM2
- Set radio RRC COM2 to mode 4: Kenwood
- Baud rate is set to 9600, since this is maximum the Expert can support for Kenwood
(both COM ports in RRC, as well as in TS-480)

Here is the result:
- The TS-480 and Expert work fine when connected directly together
- The loop through does not work
- When trying with a Y-cable from the TS-480 that goes to the SPE and RRC, the
CAT control dies when plugged into the RRC, but works when unplugged
- Do the COM terminators have any relevance?
- I also can't pick the CAT up over the remote side when using this scenario. I tried
with the PC Client, since it is easier to use in this case

I am probably doing something obvious wrong, so if someone has been able to get
this to work, please advise.
