Hi Mike,

Many, many thanks for your reply. 

For some reason I had it in my mind that when I setup my other RemoteRig with the antenna relay that the output pin went high and I was looking for +5V between the OUT pin and ground.  I must be getting old!  ::)

Now that I have it firmly in my mind how to wire it up - that is until next time!

Configuration, RRC 1258 / I/O Port Confusion

Hi All,

I have been happily using Remote Rig for over 2 years now.

I'm just having difficulty with switching an 12V antenna relay via the I/O port, but not sure why.

I have already set up the same thing to work at my holiday house about 400km away to switch between a vertical coliinear and horizontal yagi.

I'm now trying to set up something similar at home, but don't seem to be having much luck.

I have made a cable with an RJ45 into the I/O port.  With my multimeter I can see 8V between pins 7 & 8.  I can also see 9V between pins 1 & 8 and pins 2 & 8.

I have set the I/O in the radio webpage GUI to On/Off, but cannot see 5V between pins 5 & 8 (OUT0), pins 3 & 8 (OUT1) or pins 6 & 8 (OUT2) when switching ON through the GUI.  I think this is the way I did it on my holiday house remote setup.

I have compared all the radio end settings to my known working RRC at my holiday house, but still no luck.

Just seeing if I have missed anything obvious here before giving up!   :-[

Thank you Mike for your reply.  I did search the forum before posting, but could see anything obvious in English and of course I don't know every RFC either, but I suspected it may have been something along these lines.  DNS does resolve to the numerical hostname however, just not RemoteRig.

I will redo my hostnames without a digital at the front.

Hi All,

I hope I can explain this to everyone easily.  I changed the DynDNS hostname of my rig tonight and now having issues with the control head contacting that hostname. (I also have the old hostname still active)

My old hostname was abcdef.homelinux.net.

I wanted to use the numerical postcode of the rig, so I signed up the hostname 1234.homeip.net.

I entered the new hostname (1234.homeip.net) into the SIP Contact field of the control head and it won't connect to the rig, I just get the busy tone.  I can reach the web interface of the RemoteRig at the rig end, so I know the DNS is resolving correctly. 

I setup further new hostname using just letters  to be abcdef.homeip.net (no numbers) and this works for both the RemoteRig and the web interface.

Just seeing if there is an issue with the RemoteRig SIP Contact not being able to resolve numbers in a host name - maybe it mistakes them for IP addresses??

I take it back that I thought I had covered all the essential and basic settings...!  :-[  Obviously I hadn't.

General discussion forum / New RRC1258 doesn't want to work.

Hello All from Australia,

A couple of weeks ago, I received a pair of brand new RemoteRig RRC1258's direct from Microbit in Sweden.

This is my second RRC1258 setup, as I was so impressed with the first units, I bought another pair to locate another radio at my holiday house.

Over the Christmas break, I have finally had time to get the RRC1258 units out of the box and get them setup.

However, I seem to be running into a problem with the control unit end won't give me any display on the radio control head. (IC706MK2G)

The two setups are going to be exactly the same, so I will be able to connect to either home QTH setup or holiday house setup.

The setups are Icom IC706MK2G's, pair of RRC1258's with WiFi for radio & control ends, homebrew built interconnect cables between IC706MK2G & RRC1258 from original remote head cables.

The first setup which I got and installed  about 6-7 months ago has been working fine.

With the second setup, the radio end is working fine and I can connect to both setup 1 & 2 with the remote control head of setup 1.

The problem I'm having is with the radio control head end of the recently purchased RRC1258.

I can connect to the control head end alright with USB, ethernet & wifi and browse/configure the unit.

When I connect to the IC706 remote head, pressing the power on button on the remote head does almost nothing.

The only thing to happen is the orange LED on the AUX/MIC connector comes on and the speaker beeps once and I can hear a faint static noise coming from the speaker, but nothing else. No display and none of the controls/buttons work.

1. I have re-done the red jumper wires inside the RRC1258 and also swapped them with my other RRC1258 - Not working
2. Re-tested and swapped the Icom remote head cables going between the RRC1258 & IC706 remote head. Both cables work OK on the first unit and neither cable works on the second newer unit
3. Unplugged WiFi module and swapped with WiFi module in first unit. Again both WiFi units work in both units OK on the network side (Can browse/configure units)
4. Swapped IC706MK2G control heads with the first setup. Both control heads work on the first RRC1258 purchased. Both control heads don't work with the second RRC1258 purchssed.
5. Compared the internal circuits for jumper settings. The earlier purchased unit doesn't have JMP5, whereas the latter unit does, other than that it all looks similar. Nothing seems to be missing.

Basically, the earlier unit purchased works 100%. From the second unit purchased, I seemed to have narrowed the problem down to the RRC1258 control unit not working as all the other parts & pieces swapped over the first purchased unit work and all the pieces and parts attached to the second purchased unit won't work.

Now before I go returning the unit to Sweden under warranty too hastily, I just wanted to consult with the forum first on any other possible things I should try or look at. I was thinking that the problem must be in either the connecting cables or the jumpers, but I have exhaustively tested and swapped these around and always get the first unit working and the second unit not working.

Being an existing owner, I have looked at all the areas I had problems with my earlier units (passwords, network settings, ports used & port forwarding, etc.) so I'm fairly certain I have covered all the basic & essential jobs.

I hope this is enough information.

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Mike for the feedback.

The difference of fixed point over floating point is all a bit over my head, but I understand the point about deployment on smartphones & embedded processors must wait.

So possibly one to keep a lookout for in the future!

Yes I would appreciate knowing if any narrower codecs can be used. I'm looking at setting up a second remote station on a 3G/4G mobile connection and the amount of use it will get will be limited by the amount of data my plan allocates me every month. 

Quotas on mobile networks in Australia vary for a premium provider (Telstra) from 1GB upto 15GB per month and can cost $AU25 - $AU95 per month. Pre-paid will cost $20/250MB upto $180/12GB.

On 2nd tier provider (Optus) you can get 2GB (1GB peak hours + 1GB off-peak hours) for $15 upto 20GB for $79.00. Pre-paid will cost $10/300MB upto $130/15GB.

On an average 5GB/$30 per month plan on the a 2nd tier 3G provider using IMA ADPCM 4 bits 8kHz, you could use it around 25 hours per week.  Going to codec quality 0 (alaw 8kHz) will halve that to about 12.5 hours per week. So using the most efficient codec is important when keeping to a budget.

The difficulty here in Australia is the vast size of the country that needs to be covered takes a lot of equipment & investment (See maps below), the lack of competition. (1 premium provider and two second tier providers) and a population of approx 25 million.

Hi All,

I have been using Remote Rig successfully for the past 3 months.

With all the progresses that are being made out in the world, I was just wondering if and when/how additional codecs for Remote Rig are ever considered?

If so is there any process that users can be involved in suggesting and testing?

Here in VK land, much of our internet use, both home and mobile is priced and controlled on data transfer volumes. Usually charged per MB uploaded or downloaded. 

I'm cautious and conscious about how much data I use on my Remote Rig 3G/4G mobile connection and usually operate with the audio quality 12 codec (IMA ADPCM 4 bits 8kHz) which uses approx 42MB per hour total (download + upload) to get the best bang for buck.

Once newer codec that might have some promise is called 'Codec2'.

Would this codec be suitable to operate with Remote Rig?  It would cut my data volume use quite a bit.
