What Radio?
« on: 2012-11-03, 05:00:19 »
Hi Guys, M1EMB Stuart here, need a little help please, I would like to purchase a radio to go with the RemoteRigs that I also plan to buy shortly but I am not sure what radio to pick up.

The radio needs to have HF/2/70 and not break the bank , I was looking at a IC-706MRK2g but not many around I could find.

Can anyone please offer any advice on a good radio with the above coverage.

Thank you

Hi Stuart,

Assuming you want to use a remote panel for the RemoteRig, then you don't have much choice on the low end.
It is pretty much between the IC706 and Yaesu FT-857.

From there you go to the TS-2000 with RC-2000 panel, but that would cost around twice as much.

Thank you very much sir that's a great help, least I know there is another option.   As far as RemoteRigs go which radio out of the two is most favored do you think?   Just looking for a good hassle free connection from Rx to Tx as it won't be easy for me to access the radio end for a little while after its setup.

Thank you.

Stuart

I really can't answer that, Stuart. It is more a personal thing if you prefer the 706 or 857. Note
that the RemoteRig support for the 857 is fairly recent, so there is probably more experience
available in the community for the 706. But this may be a moot point within a year or so, since
I believe the 857 sells better.

Perhaps someone can chime in that has used both rigs, I haven't used either one myself.

In a few month there will be a third rig which handle HF to 70 cm, the IC-7100. I think that will be a good choice, but a  different price level of course

Hi Stuart

The 857 is a nice small rig to go. If you very basic user it will be ok. For more complex use, you will need the user manuel handy, because the radio HMI is not the best

Enjoy

Hi guys

Thanks for all the help, Ijust purchased a 706mk2G, might look at upgrading next year to the 7100 as that looks pretty cool, got the 706 for just over $600 so think that was ok.

Thx
