Sorry for the delay; I am on vacation and not able to react so quickly right now.

Several things:

- Just as a side on terminology; what you call the "remote-side" is what we call the "control side". Just to prevent future confusion.

- I do not see how your configuration can possibly work. An external Winkeyer should be plugged into the control RRC's I/O jack per
the manual. Please see the RemoteRig manual pages 94,95 & 242 (Appendix B) for details. Then it will key correctly. This may be
what is causing your crashes.

- To use the RRC's built-in Winkeyer emulation, all you do is to change the the RRC's serial setting on COM3 to Winkeyer, then use that
virtual serial port (under Windows Device Manager) in Win-Test as a Winkeyer. Very simple, but sometimes it can be buggy, so you may
prefer to use the first method if you already have an External Winkeyer.

- I am not sure why the control RRC crashes, but it may be caused by the fact that you are doing something it doesn't like as described
above. Otherwise, it may be a power supply problem. If not, get Winkeyer working and we can work on that problem later.

Hi John,

Try the following:

Play around with these 3 until you are satisfied:
- increase rx jitter buffer to min 12+
- increase rx jitter delay to min 10+
- audio packet size 20 or 40

Other possibilities that may help:
- audio quality to 0 (half the bandwidth of codec 2 and more than adequate for SSB & CW)
- set RTP to continuous

From the Elecraft manual:

2. Set the K3 for rear panel mic input and no bias (see the K3 Owner’s manual for details), regardless of
the type of mic used. The RRC-1258 units automatically supply bias.

I believe the side and front jacks are wired in parallel. I think when one is plugged in, the other is disabled, so you can't have
anything plugged into both at the same time.

Wigi,

That is hard to find, using the information provided. However, it is likely an issue with the internet
connection, router, switch, etc. and will need to be found by using the process of elimination.

The first step I would suggest is to move the control RRC and K3 to another location and try it from
there instead. If the problem persists, then it is at the radio location, otherwise visa-versa.

Once you figure out for sure which side causes it, then you need to systematically go through the network
components and settings to find the culprit. An example is having SIP ALG not turned off in the router.

There is a "band-aid" using RRC settings to help with somewhat flaky internet connections, but this would only
help with audio pops and not the kind of problems that you are experiencing.

I have also experienced a lot of issues using the RRC's USB for CAT. Some PC's seems to be unstable. I think in
that case, some Windows settings may help. Here you can get some tips:

Wigi,

Looks you have the K3/0 mini and not the K3/0, since you have a side audio input.

The cable that one gets with that rig is pretty much idiot-proof, so that not likely the problem as
it would be for the K3/0.

I would double check the rig settings to make sure that the local K3/0 mini is NOT set to rear input.
Make sure that the mini is NOT connected to the radio side when you turn it on by disconnecting its
internet connection. Then use the mini's menu to make sure that the correct input is selected. If the
mini is connected to the radio side, it will only change the radio side.

If this isn't the problem, then I suggest posting on the Elecraft reflector, since this appears to be their
problem.

Hi Dave,

Using CAT has absolutely nothing to do with the control panel. One uses the control panel as you plan,
but most people wish to have computerized control and logging by using CAT on top of that, just like in
the station. You are an exception if that is not the case.

There is no easy way to remote USB ports using simple devices and you can not use it in this case. Instead,
I would look at my suggestion of daisy-chaining the three devices and controlling them over CAT instead. I
can take a look at the Elecraft web site to see what the KAT500 has available, but I do believe that it offers
serial control of some sort and there is a utility available on their web site. I am a K3 user, but never used any
of their other accessories.

So basically you will not be able to do what you want to do the way you planned to do it and need to rethink it.

Hi Dave,

To answer first the easy question about the type of USB adapter: only buy ones using FTDI chips and never
ones using Prolific or unknown chips.

Now to your plans: there are several things that won't quite work the way you want. I will do my best to summarize:

- USB adapters can only be used between a computer of some sort and a device, but never between devices without an
operating system. These require host mode to work, which in turn requires device drivers on the o/s. So going from e.g.
an RRC COM1 to an amp or ATU will require a "real" serial cable.

- I assume that you wish to use CAT from the TS-480, since you show it going to a PC. In this case, COM2 is used for CAT
between the two locations. In other words, you can not use COM2 for an amp or ATU if you use it for CAT, since it must be
between the TS-480's RS232 port and the radio RRC's COM2.

- One good news: you do not need to use USB adapters between the control RRC and the PC. The RRC has its own built-in
USB to serial converter, so you only need to use one single USB cable (that came with the RRC) between the PC and RRC for
both COM1 and COM2 (CAT).

- Since you only have one serial port that you can use for other devices, such as the ATU, amp, rotor, etc., then look at other
serial servers to provide this integration. There are dedicated devices from Microbit: http://www.remoterig.com/wp/?page_id=636
or generic devices, such as those from Lantronix and other companies, e.g.: https://www.lantronix.com/products/uds2100/

- I believe that the Elecraft devices offer a daisy-chained CAT integration, so that some programs such as the Win4K3Suite https://va2fsq.com/
may offer a method to control the ATU and amp using the single CAT connection, but I am not 100% sure.

You can not use the K3/0 mini's USB port with RemoteRig and must use the instructions that
are in the link that you posted. Otherwise, it will not work!

Since you can use the RRC's USB cable instead, what's the issue?

P.S.: actually the S-Box is for CAT multiplexing and would not help you much. Maybe the
Y-Box would help you with the KPA-500.

Also, I use serial port servers for my rotor and amp control. These have a couple of advantages
in that they are stand-alone and always connected. The ones I use are Lantronix, such as the

Hi Dave,

I can't help you on the KPA500, so maybe someone else can, or try the Elecraft reflector instead. I use a 12v
power line to turn on SPE amps and it works great.

What I wanted to say is there is no problem using COM2 instead of COM1 if one does not use CAT. This is a
straight through connection, as you can see in the manual.

You may also wish to take a look at the boxes sold by N6TV at https://www.kkn.net/~n6tv/S-BOX/  and at
https://www.kkn.net/~n6tv/Y-BOX/index.html as these may meet your needs better.

This sounds like a power supply problem. It must work without the USB cable in it.

Here is my K3 CAT Checklist:

Note first that in a "Twin" configuration, COM2 is used to "tie" the two ends together and carries the CAT data. In order to access CAT, you need to get to COM2 without touching it. The easiest method is to duplicate COM2 over COM1 using a function in the RRC as follows:

- Change both RRC's COM1 to mode-7. Note that the baud rate does not have to be identical with COM2 to fit a lower bandwidth or software requirement.

- If using a "real" serial cable:
     - connect a straight through serial cable between the control RRC's COM1 and the PC. If using a USB to serial converter cable, make sure it is using an FTDI chipset.
     - note that if you also use the radio RRC's COM1, the pinout is not the standard straight-through serial port. Use the pinout description in the RemoteRig manual, or just try a null-modem cable which usually works (may need a gender changer).
     - the  serial setting for COM1 "Use USB Com Port as COM1" must be set to NO

- If using USB:
     - make sure that first Microbit Setup Manager is installed first on the control PC to get the drivers.
     - Then change the serial settings for COM1 to change "Use USB Com Port as COM1" to YES
     - connect the USB cable between the RRC and computer and wait for the drivers to finish installing
     - go to the Windows Device Manager and look at which virtual serial port was assigned to COM1 and use that for your software, taking the correct baud rate into account.

Note also that you can pull CAT data in parallel off of the radio RRC to use a PC on that end, or to sync with a remote device (amplifier, SteppIR, etc.)
