KENWOOD TS-2000 CAT
« on: 2014-09-01, 22:16:41 »
I'm attempt to connect KENWOOD TS-2000 CAT but don't work under COM1, COM2 or COM via front USB.

When I connect to USB the system add 4 virtual ports and only 1 answered but muted audio only, no CAT available.

Can You help me ?

Thanks in advance.

You didn't say if you were using a PC to control the TS-2000, or if you are using the RC-2000
control panel. I will assume you are using a PC in the following.

CAT is available on COM2. In order for it to work properly, make sure:

- That a normal serial cable is installed between the radio RRC and TS-2000s' CAT port
- That both RRC's are configured per the directions in the manual (pages 170 - 174).
- That the TS-2000's CAT rate is set to match the RRC (9600 if you followed the manual)
- If you are using a USB cable instead of a "real" serial cable on the control side, then make
sure that "Use USB COM port on COM2" is set to YES and use the correct Windows virtual COM
port (in Device Manager).

If this list is correct, then there is no reason that it would not work.

Hi Mitch,

I use remote TS-2000 with RC-2000 and work fine under adsl link but I can't use CAT. Test under Ham Radio Deluxe (Windows) and RUMlog (Mac OS X).

I'm use a DB9 cable (Pin 2 Pin) and work fine attached to real serial port in local but don't work via RR.

At Mac OS X use an DB9-USB serial converter. Test with FTDI, CP & Prolific adapters.

In page 174 I can see DB9 cable use only Pin 2, 3, 5, 7 and 8 but my cable have 9 wire Pin 2 Pin...

Test at 4800, 9600, 57600 bps with TNC option disabled.

Jose,

That was important information I was lacking before  ;)

Using the RC-2000, it would work just like the TS-480 as follows:

CAT CHECKLIST
---------------------
In both scenarios, you MUST first install a standard serial cable between the TS-480 body and COM2 of the radio RRC!

USING A STANDARD SERIAL CABLE
============================
1) Change the CAT rate on the TS-480 to 4800 baud (menu 56). This rate keeps traffic over the internet to a minimum and faster is not necessary for CAT.

2) Change the COM2 serial settings of the radio-RRC to mode-4, 4800 baud, data bits 8, stop bits 1 and submit/apply changes.

3) Change the COM2 serial settings of the control-RRC to mode-4, 4800 baud, data bits 8, stop bits 1 and submit/apply changes.

4) Plug a serial cable in between your PC and the control-RRC COM2

5) Set your software to use the correct COM port on your PC at 4800-8-1-N

USING A USB CABLE
=================

3) Install the Microbit Setup Manager if you already haven't. You don't need the problem for this, but this installs the correct drivers on your PC.

4) Change the COM2 serial settings of the control-RRC to mode-4, 4800 baud, data bits 8, stop bits 1, "use USB Com Port as COM2" to "Yes" and submit/apply changes.

5) Plug a USB cable between your PC and control-RRC. Make sure you do NOT do his before step 3 above!

6) Find out the correct port in your Windows Device Manager to use by looking for the "Microbit RRC Virtual COM Port (COM2)"

7) Set your software to use the this COM port on your PC at 4800-8-1-N.

Hi Mitch,

This weekend test in local again at 4800 bps and check bridges under Radio & Control box.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Mitch !

Just now I'm looking into RR boxes and attempt to use CAT but don't work  >:(

I connect a DB9-DB9 pin to pin from TS-2000 to RR Radio Com2.

From the radio box use a usb-serial convert and test with usb-mini usb to usb from RR mini usb to usb computer port, under windows (here) or Mac OS X (remote QTH)...

Hi Jose,

Please read my checklist again. You should not use a USB to serial converter. There is one built into the RRC
box.

Just read the checklist again and follow the instructions and it will work just fine.

Note also that this method to give you CAT control will not work on the radio RRC, but only on the control RRC!
If I understood you correctly, you tried it on the radio side. There is a way to make it work there as well, but it is
trickier and let's get the control side working first.

Hi Mitch,

I've got a problem... I'm testing with 3 DB9 cables and can't connect direct now  :-\

I can make one serial cable this week and test next weekend.

Thanks in advance for your time.

Jose,

You don't need a serial cable at all on the control side. A USB cable is all you need without a converter.
A USB cable came with your RRC. Just follow the checklist and it will work just fine if you on the control
side if you installed the standard serial cable and set COM2 on the radio side as per the checklist.

Hi Mitch,

This week I make a serial cable like 174 man. page and now work fine under DB9 Radio box and front USB like COM2  :)

Thank You for your time.
